The Law in Society: Upholding Justice and Maintaining Order
Societies benefit greatly from laws as they have the importance of keeping citizens safe, by asserting rights, duties and justice when needed. Throughout the year’s laws have been brought forward to maintain peace, protect the general safety and ensure that the rights of citizens are not abused by other people, by organizations or by the government itself. Law is a system of rules and guidelines which are enforced through social institutions to govern behaviour, wherever possible. In the essay about law will be reviewed why law is important for the society.
Laws are pivotal in society they offer guidance in places like workplaces which allows equality and anti-discrimination. Sex discrimination in the workplace is unfortunately common, there are many common offences where women are not as paid as much as men for the same job title, however, sex discrimination can go against males too, this is evident in the court case Helbig v Bundaberg. This case was nationally recognised as a male teacher was harassed and nearly fired for wearing an earring and told to resign if there were any issues. This was taken to court, the school accepted that its refusal to allow the man to wear an earring was discriminatory on the ground of sex. The tribunal said the man had pursued his rights discreetly and respectfully, and the school had complied with the requirement to allow the male teacher to wear the earring as it was comfortable for him. This example of sex discrimination in the workplace is evidence as to why laws are required as if Helbig had refused to remove the earring he would've been at the risk of being unemployed. Furthermore, the teacher was able to feel comfortable at work which is a representation of the importance of laws.
Racial discrimination is evidently still occurring in society, there are laws put in place to ensure the safety and anti-discrimination of all Australians whether citizens or not. In one case a lady of Chinese origin was denied service due to her lack of English, she was also not brought an interpreter when asked and told 'Go back to China' by an employee, this unacceptable behaviour was brought to court where Miss Xi was allowed to press charges in which she refused to. This is a clear indication of why laws are important they allow all participants of the law to be brought justice and ensure safety. Racial discrimination is evidently being dealt with by the law in this case as it allows Miss Xi to feel comfortable about her background and her place in Australia. This is a clear reason why laws are important.

However, his rights where not increased and other board members provoked his rights for no reason, when brought to the court they were able to extract the issue and allow the victim to get his fair share of rights of the company.
