How To Kill Our Doubts
Introduction
Killing doubts is one of the most difficult tasks in a world full of uncertainty. Brian Tracy begins his chapter (chapter 5) with this powerful quote on the importance of killing doubts. He quotes Franklin Delano Roosevelt saying “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubt of today. Let us move forward with strong and active faith”. Click to tweet. We can only kill the doubt of tomorrow with the faith of today. With a poisoned mind against tomorrow, nothing can germinate therein. Therefore, to be successful we must substitute doubt with faith. In this essay I will discuss the best methods you can use in killing doubts.
How to Kill Doubts
Know the ‘great truth’. The greatest truth is that no one is better than you. If someone is, however, performing better than you, it simply means they had learned how to do it earlier than you. Learn everything you need to know to succeed. Nothing breeds doubts as much as ignorance. On the other hand, nothing kills doubts more than knowledge. The best way to predict your future is to create it yourself. If you are doubting if you will make it in life, then your doubt is true. Growing your knowledge on what you need to succeed is an effective means in killing doubts
Break away from “learned helplessness”. A lot of people usually feel trapped and helpless. In this light, many see their job as a trap while others see their current financial status as the trap. Feeling you are trapped and hence helpless is actually the trap. According to Dr. Martin Seligman’s theory of ‘learned helplessness’ and ‘learned optimism’, learned helplessness is poisoned into our minds during upbringing. For example, destructive criticism, failure experiences have the tendency to make us feel we are trapped and hence helpless. On the contrary, you can break loose from the trap. You can lose that weight, you can get that better job, and you can get rid of that abusive relationship. Also, you can earn that dream paycheck. So, get out there and start killing doubts that limit you from attending greatness.
Get loose from the trap of complacency. This trap is as more dangerous than the trap of learned helplessness. Unfortunately, humans by nature are reluctant to change even when there are not happy with their present state. They usually just try to find a way to adapt and survive. They love that comfort corner. However, they sooner or later feel strapped, helpless, and powerless with the slightest disequilibrium. They can’t survive the slightest discomfort and turn to blame everybody except themselves. However, to kill doubt and attain success, seek for opportunities, not security. Interestingly, there is no limit to how far we can go. If you ever feel you could do something before an overwhelming doubt sweep over your thought, then know the latter feeling is the deceiver.
Break away from your only enemy called fear. The biggest enemy of unsuccessful people is fear. However, successful people train themselves to do the things they fear first. Remember, fear feeds on ignorance. You only fear what you do not have full knowledge about. For instance, if you were to be placed on the pilot board to a flying jet, you would definitely control the direction only with your echoing scream of fear. Why is this so? The answer is no other but ignorance. However if you go learn rocket science under a trusted mentorship, the knowledge you gain will give the fear a quick eviction notice.
Why Doubts Survive in Us
Just like light and darkness cannot coexist, knowledge and fear cannot be friends. With knowledge of the Hows and Whys of things come confidence and courage. What you believe works like magic. Therefore, as Brian puts it, “if you believe you can do a thing, or you believe you cannot, in either case, you are probably right”. Your life cannot change until you change the way you think. They way you think are evident in your action. Your true belief system is revealed when your equilibrium has been distorted. For instance, when you are angry, upset, under pressure, etc.
Doubts and Fears
Fight your belief system. To kill fear, reject what you fear. Think possibility and not impossibility. You can also use the law of reversibility to kill fear. For instance, by acting as if you were already courageous, rich, made of substance, etc., you soon become. D evelop ‘learned optimism’. You do not need to expect a positive outcome because they are evidence for that. You, however, expect a positive outcome because that’s what you desire. The law of expectation states that “whatever we expect soon become”. Also, the law of attraction says “we are living magnet and as such attracts to our self the people, events, and circumstances consistent to our predominant thought”. Therefore, to kill fear we rather need to desire what we need not be fearful. Reject negative thought. The law of correspondence says “your outer world corresponds to your inner world”. As a result, nothing can permanently stay in your life unless it corresponds with something within you.
Conclusion
Take action for something you fear. Kill that doubt today. Also, accept 100% responsibility for everything you are or will ever be. Remember, to kill fear, you must remove all the “I can’t” in that things you know if you can, your life will be admirable. Move out of that comfort zone. Do that thing you must do to be happy. Start that course today, quit that abusive relationship today, start that workout today, start that business today. If you can think, you can be.
