Introduction of the Packaging Industry

First, of all we start with the importance and the concept of economy and industry with in country so economy is the system of human activities which consist of manufacture, distribution, exchange, and consumption of goods and services of a country.In this report we tried to inculcate that information which is related to the industry specific like packages. So Pakistan, a rapidly developing nation, has a different economy that includes textiles, chemicals, agriculture and other industries like packages etc.If we see the industry setup in Pakistan we observed that Industrial- sector, including production. In the late 1960s Pakistan was a model of economic development around the world and there was much recommendation for its economic progression. But later on we faced some issue that has been discussed in this report briefly but’’ Pakistan has seen a growing middle class population and poverty levels have decreased by 10% since 2001. GDP growth, in the industrial and service sectors, remained in the 6-8% range in 2004-06”.

At the time of independence packages signed an agreement with Pakistani Government that there would be only one packages firm in Pakistan which would be working on packaging material. Later on, new small package factories were opened with the passage of time but all these factories were working under the main packaging firm.Packages Industry was established before independence and takes pride in Pakistan industries economy. As a market bests in corrugated box, corrugated paper, paper board and other raw material. Packaging industry will enable to improve their corrugated box for worldwide customer through Quality and services. Packing material dimensions of 97,000 ton of paper and paper board is 11,000 ton are the type for all packing material. They also improved the size of paper and paper board will be 300,000 ton per year.Over the years, the company enhanced to continue its facilities and growing demand. Packages limited maintain on long term credit. Packages has always been at the front of new improvement and innovations which includes the use of agriculture by-products like wheat straw and other raw material for paper and corrugated box. Packages industry is looking forward for marketing strategy of improving customer value and productivity. Production level of its company is 79%. Packaging industry in Pakistan showing to increases its strength in business and also achieve growth rate over the year for achieving task and glory success.

Introduction of the Company

A Roshan packages is one of the small packaging organization in Pakistan. The owner of Roshan Packages Mr. Abdul Majeed Bhutta establishes their business in 1998 with the corrugating box making facility in Pakistan. The company registered in 2002 as sole proprietorship organization. Roshan packages manufacturing die-cut, corrugating sheets, corrugating tray, corrugating Furniture. They are pioneer in introducing export quality fruit packaging in Pakistan, before the facility of these corrugated boxes there were usage of wooden crates and other material was fame in market.

In short they change they change the sense of keeping products in paper except in wood boxes such as fruit packaging. Fast growing of Roshan packages is consequence of their Quality and services. This organization made contact with FMCGs (Fast manufacturing consumer goods) and other multinational companies.They believe in building lasting relationship with customer. Five members are indulging in top management. The Strength of company’s labor is 58. Per month revenue is Rs.10 million rupees.

Functions of the Equipment’s / Machines and their process

Corrugating Department

In Corrugating Department Roshan Packages has three Corrugation machines is use to join liner and fluting paper to make the carton roll. Gas and glue are use in this machine. Glue is use to stick both papers together, gas is use to heat them and the main purpose of electricity is to run the machine or to move the material (paper) from one side to another.

Paper Cutting Department

In Paper Cutting Department Roshan Packages has two Hand Cutting Machines in which one is use for the carton roll cut into pieces according to the requirements and the other machine is use for the paper cutting with the help of hand cutter.

Pasting Department

After giving a shape from hand cutting Machine then pasting machine is use to join sheets to make a high quality sheet according to the Customer Requirements. Sodium Silicate/Glue is use to stick these sheets together, and the electricity is used to run the machine.

Printing and Staling Department

Rotary Machine: After giving a shape from pasting machine then rotary machine is used to cut two sides by size of high quality sheets.

Printing & Slotting Machine: Roshan Packages has a fully automatic printing & slotting machine which is print and cut the corrugated sheet by the request or the size or making of box which give proper shape to the box according to the client requirement (means what they want to print on the box page). Colors are used in machine as a raw material.

Packing Department

Pin Machine: Pin machine is used to staple the sheet to a desire shape. Raw material used in the machine is only “Coil”. After that the packing boxes are sent to the seller on different pieces.

Manually Glue: According to the customer requirements Roshan Packages is use glue not the Pin machine because in Pin machine use of Mattel is the Problem especially for the Textile industry so manually glue the Printing Sheets.PackingIn packing according to the Customer Requirements Roshan Packages make the Bundle of 10 or 20 Boxes.

Strengths of Roshan Packages

• Due to mass production the cost is reduced and the company earns the positive balance or revenue.
• It is having the advance machinery.
• Its brand is usually satisfactory as a symbol of quality.
• The company is providing any Type of Corrugated box, Sheet, Roll in any Size.
• Purchasing of the raw material direct from the manufacturers / suppliers.
• Goodwill is also the strength of Roshan packages.

Weakness of Roshan Packages

• Multinational companies have their revenues in Billions of dollars, and we’ve in millions of rupees, so we cannot compete with multinational organizations.
• We don’t have the R&D department in our company.
• It’s a small company operating by fewer people in higher management. Therefore, employees don’t have the workshops of training. Lack of motivation due to few opportunities for the personals to go up the hierarchy.
• Seasonal effect up to some extent.

Opportunities of Roshan Packages

• Can become one of the best packaging manufactures in Pakistan amongst small companies.
• Consumers and companies are becoming more conscious about the quality of the products. So we’re trying our best to make our products more reliable, durable, satisfactory and useful for the consumers by enhancing our technological items / machines / equipment’s.

Threats of Roshan Packages

• We advertise but less than the multinational companies the multinational can the amount of tax on Ad. But we as small organization are unable to pay such huge amount in the context of tax. So the taxation policy by the government on Ads is the threat or cause of the decrement of revenue.
• The use of offset packaging is increasing day by day, & larger use of polyethylene and disposable packaging.
• In Pakistan Power crisis is the biggest and uncontrollable threat for us.
• The Business world is the world of competition. Everyone wants to be the best amongst their competitors, its significant element.

Problems Encountered

Problems in manufacturing department of Roshan Packages: At the moment the Pakistani industries due to some not negligible causes have a downward slope. There’re lots of issues to discuss that are responsible for, such as power crisis, natural gas crisis. If we take a look on these two issues we’ll get to know how many problems occur in the absence of power and gas crisis. For example in the absence of power or electricity the manufacturing department of any company is severely affected.

A Roshan package is also concerned with the production department, the problem is been started one and a half year before we don’t have the gas pipeline connection. After getting the connection of gas pipeline, we were able to start our production. Now currently the problems that are coming in our pathway as obstacles:

Wastage Issues

In the manufacturing of corrugated box 2% wastage is normal wastage annually in other companies or multinationals. But Roshan Packages has 11% wastage on annually basis. But in the business world this percentage of wastage in raw material (RM) makes the company disable to produce the maximum number of units. And if the percentage increases due to any reason there’re chances that company would be wiped out from the map of the business world. When designing and packaging the product, it ensures that there’s minimum wastage of material (if possible, no waste at all). The precise & humble reason is when organization manufacture and design the product by the using raw material is often expensive. Wasting material means the company is wasting their money. As I told you above that if you’re not competitive the name of the company would be wiped out from the map of the business world. So Wastage ought to be minimized. If there is slight waste of material then a lesser amount of material is required to manufacture a project.

In Roshan packages the wastage of raw material is so high which is 11% as mentioned above; due to the unskilled labor and ancient or early technological machines.

Power is used to run the machines and making the beautiful designs on the corrugated box. If the percentage of the waste material is so high than other companies it means the machine through which we are producing the goods or products are consuming the power in cutting, shaping or removing the unwanted material.

Delay Issue

With the lack of concentration of government on two crucial / critical issues electricity and gas crisis we are incur losses day by day. We’re unable to deliver our claimed consignments (corrugated box, corrugated rolls) on time. Due to this political treachery our customers are retaining, because they want their consignments at their door step on time. So late delivery of goods also affects the manufacturing, cause if the customer is leaving our production would also decrease. When production decreases; company automatically incur losses.

Quality Issues

Essential or unique characteristic, material goods are called quality.In this competitive world every organization is trying to make their product finest (i.e. quality product). So for this purpose there’s a need of quality control chamber (i.e. quality control process).

Quality control is a practice that is used to make certain level of quality (i.e. value) in a product. Usually, it includes systematically inspecting the quality of products. The simple objective of this practice is to make the products reliable, adequate, harmless and economically sufficient.

Organizations that are more conscious with the quality of their products have a number of experts / experienced people for this purpose who observes the quality of goods. They arbitrarily select the products and examine it. If they recognize under quality product that don’t lie at the line of standard (i.e. benchmark) set by the company.

It means there’s some kind of detriment or flaw in that particular product, as an example the recognized organization (i.e. nestle) throw their entire cereal at one time when they found out that there’re some iron particles mixed in the cereals. The iron particles came into that cereal when two parts of the machines were rubbing with each other. Then nestle invited the research team from Germany to investigate that from where the iron particles came in it? Nestle has some basic quality control tools to identify the quality of the product.

Another flaw is that even we’ve the old technology but by using near to ground quality paper to make the low quality corrugated box; sheet and roll which has debilitate strength. And then by using water ink the magnificence of design on the box doesn’t look good.

Sometimes the unskilled labor is responsible for making the low quality good or product. Even they’re provided by the new technology or machines or equipments, they don’t even know that how to make the finest product or good (corrugated box)? If they’re not experienced they would keep the corrugated box or any product in the machine for the lesser time, or can make some other mistakes in other processes of making product. So the debilitate material would come as final product.

Work-Culture Issues

Even it’s a small company, there’s the diversification in Roshan packages which is not good for company’s reputation. As we all know most of the people come into the big cities from rural areas with the intention of work and for earning money. There’re some conflicts on the basis of cast, color, religion and ethnic conflicts especially.

So people from different provinces of Pakistan are working in Roshan packages. Therefore, the ethnic issues are there that profoundly affects and keep the influence on the manufacturing department in small company. Currently, we’ve hired the 11 Pathan workers as labor in manufacturing department. Those Pathan workers have some seriously ethnic problem with other workers on the basis of some pathetic issues. Therefore, the slope or graph of the manufacturing good has decline or downward shape / direction.
