My Aim in Life: to Become a Pharmacist
Why I want to be a pharmacist (essay)
Pharmacy is a constantly evolving field, and as a pharmacist, one must be well-versed in the latest research and techniques to provide the best care possible to their patients. This requires a great deal of dedication and hard work, as well as a deep understanding of the chemistry and biology behind drugs and their effects on the body. In my essay on my aim in life to become a pharmacist, I will delve into the various aspects of this field that make it both challenging and rewarding, including the ability to work closely with other healthcare professionals, the opportunity to specialize in a particular area of Pharmacy, and the potential for research and development in the field. I am eager to pursue this career path and contribute to the important work of improving people's health and well-being through the use of medication and other therapies.
During my level 3 I took the three science subjects. From studying these, I was able to pick up many transferrable skills, including analysis, problem-solving, and time management. These skills were gained by completing practical experiments and doing a lot of important research, and I feel that being familiar with these skills can be very practical for my degree. I thoroughly enjoyed studying topics such as diseases and immunity and chemical bonding. Pharmacy interrelates the two subjects of Chemistry and Biology in a way that influences me to delve further into this field. To explore the field of pharmacy further, I decided to do work experience in a Lloyds pharmacy. During this work experience, I had vital responsibilities such as date checking of drugs, making doses for patients, and making prescription orders. I was also able to shadow the pharmacist in charge and assist with checking the right prescription and dosage of drugs. By having this invaluable opportunity in this community pharmacy, I was able to understand what the usual kind of responsibilities a pharmacist would have and the important role and affect that they can have on people’s lives; it was a really fulfilling experience and it convinced me that this was the right career path for me. Since arriving to the UK a couple of years ago, I have learned to adapt to the culture and got to know more about different people with different cultures. I believe that this demonstrates my versatility, as I can settle in new environments with ease. I feel that this skill can be very useful going forward, as the healthcare environment will always change over time and the role of a pharmacist will also evolve.
Working in the retail industry here in the UK as well as in Spain for the past few years has allowed me to understand the importance of interaction and having an impact on the lives of others. This has given me the chance to use my initiative whilst working independently as well as in a team, allowing me to become a more responsible individual. I have become more accomplished at these skills and I am confident that pharmacy can provide a platform for me to use these qualities to assist those who need help. Outside of work and education, my pastimes include staying active by playing football, reading, and participating in voluntary/charity work. I have previously volunteered for charity organisations such as Stonebridge City Farm and Framework. In 2017, I was presented with the National Children and Young People award after helping Framework raise awareness and funds for homeless people across the country, as this was one of the projects that I was extremely passionate about. I was nominated onto the National Citizenship Service regional youth board. My responsibilities involved informing others about ongoing problems and issues we face in society, like homelessness and mental health.
I believe that this highlights my leadership qualities and my ambition to make a positive difference in society as an aspiring pharmacist. In the future I plan to volunteer abroad with International Citizenship Service.
