My Analysis Of Arthur Miller's Play The Crucible
In the Crucible, I believe that it was both Abigail and John Proctor who were responsible for the deaths of the people who were wrongly convicted and hanged. Throughout the story, both of them were denying the truth, and basically lying about everything. Abigail basically faked everything that she saw, and she even made the other girls go along with it. Mary Warren ended up getting in trouble for something that she didn't even do. Both of them caused many problems in Salem.
In Act I Abigail denies that she and the girls engaged in witchcraft. She states that Betty fainted from shock when her father caught them dancing. Parris asks Abigail if her name and reputation are truly unimpeachable. She also denies anything she did wrong and states that Elizabeth hates her because she would not work like a slave. She mentions that Parris is only worried about her employment status because he's jealous of her expenses.
John Proctor, who was a local farmer was uneasy with himself because he had affair with Abigail. His wife, Elizabeth, discovered the affair did not allow Abigail to work at their house. In Act II John Proctor has dinner with his wife. Mary Warren, their servant, has gone to the witch trials, defying Elizabeth’s order that she remain in the house. Then, there were 14 people in jail due to the accusation of witchcraft. If the witches who were accused dont confess, they were hanged. Proctor does not want to believe all this craziness and he tells his wife that Abigail had sworn that her dancing had nothing to do with witchcraft. So now his wife wants him to testify that the accusations are a sham. He says that he isn't able to do prove it because Abigail told him all this information while they were alone in a room.
When Mary Warren comes back home, she gives Elizabeth a doll that she sewed in court, saying that it is a gift. She reports that thirty-nine people now stand accused. Elizabeth’s name was apparently mentioned in the accusations but Mary will not say who accused her. Elizabeth is convinced that it was Abigail who accused her of witchcraft, in order to take her place. At Elizabeth’s urging, Proctor tells Hale that Abigail told him that the children’s sickness had nothing to do with witchcraft. Danforth sends for Abigail and her troop of girls. Abigail denies Mary’s testimony, as well as her explanation for the doll in the Proctor home. Mary maintains her assertion that the girls are lying about what they are seeing. Hathorne asks her to pretend to faint for them. Mary says she cannot because she does not have “the sense of it” now. Under continued pressure, she explains that she only thought she saw spirits. Abigail and the girls begin screaming that Mary is sending her spirit at them. Mary pleads with them to stop, but the girls continue to repeat her words.
In the Crucible, I think both Abigail and John Proctor are responsible to for the deaths of the people that were convicted and hanged. It showed how Abigail was lying and being fake about almost everything, to the point where someone else got blamed for something she did. She was also able to get the other girls to go along with her lies. Due to her lies resulted into innocent people being hung and convicted for something they didn't do. Overall, both of them caused many of the problems that happened in Salem.
