My Challenging Years In High School
If you would have met me four years ago you would not think that I would become a studious lady of the illustrious Clark Atlanta University. During my freshman year of high school, I walked the halls with a negative approach towards my academic journey. I started off my first semester with bad habits such as procrastination, cheating on assignments, and not putting much effort into my work. While my peers were making great academic accomplishments and receiving awards, there was me just satisfied with the thought of being an average student. Therefore, I was performing at a low level which resulted in grades like low C’s, and later turned into F’s.
Throughout the year, I developed a lack of determination towards my education because like many other students I wasn’t getting support from home. The lack of support came from my mother working very long hours to make sure that I had everything that I needed and wanted. However, this happened to affect me because she wasn’t there to help with challenging tasks such as projects, homework, and take-home quizzes. My poor performance and lack of preparation pushed me to transfer schools for a better outcome. During my sophomore year I decided to transfer schools because I wanted to challenge myself with a different academic rigor. There wasn’t much of an improvement in my grades but instead there was an improvement in my drive to get my work done.
Going into my junior and senior year, I started to take my academics more seriously because I knew more was at stake. My mom and I started to tour colleges and out of all the schools I visited, Clark Atlanta University caught my attention. The school offers many programs and opportunities, and it upholds a wealthy legacy and family-loving ambiance. I had the opportunity to visit the campus and I was very amazed by the positive energy and history that was shared. After being on the campus I felt as if the school was truly destined for me. I knew that I wanted to attend the illustrious Clark Atlanta University to major in the fashion design program. However, I realized that I needed to attend more study halls, turn my work in on time, and make good grades on every assignment. I pushed myself to aim high and to excel in everything, so I could attend my top school. I made sure that I got the perfect SAT score and I applied during the early action period. Although, I pushed myself during the college process I was also very determined to graduate. I made it my mission to raise my GPA and to graduate with all A’s and my mission was accomplished.
I never thought that I would be in the position I am in today. I am a true representation of the quote “the greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it. ” My years of high school was very challenging. However, the reward of making my family and parents proud was very worth it.
