My Desire To Build A Career In Film Industry
Film and writing are two subjects that I’m passionate about, I feel that studying them will allow me to pursue a career in a field of work that I am deeply interested in and motivated to work in. They both encompass a large majority of my free time and are important to me as an individual, both allowing me to express myself. Films bring out many different emotions in different people. The worlds and characters created resonate in the audience in a way that isn’t possible in other formats. The use of visuals creates an immersive world that the audience would never be able to experience outside of film such as the work of David Lynch or Stanley Kubrick. To me films are important as they can inform and display entirely different perspectives that the audience may never have considered. I find analysis on film particularly intriguing as it allows me to further understand what is being conveyed, the effect it has on the audience and how it is created through the use of camera work and editing. Studying Photography has taught me the technical knowledge of not only Digital but Analogue cameras too. It has let me explore the importance of composition but also helped me develop my own style of photography learning from other filmmakers and photographers. During my A-level of Product design, I have been able to learn to effectively plan and manage my time, but also how to work toward a specific brief. It has taught me the importance of development as ideas may not work at first but after challenging myself redesigning a product the outcome would be better than before.
In my spare time when I watch a film I like to write reviews on ones that stand out to me, I think critical analysis allows me further to appreciate the films and the work that went into them, to go alongside this I have maintained a subscription to Empire 2 years running.
Studying A-Level history has furthered my ability to cross-examine and evaluate sources, teaching me to look further into what is expressed but also what is repressed, what isn’t shown and how that affects the source. It has helped me understand the historical context of not only warfare but photography and film, learning of its importance during different eras such as its use for propaganda during World War 2 and how much has changed since then. History has also taught me analytical writing skills to help me when I write film reviews for the media I watch. I have previously entered my pictures into photography competitions, which was valuable to me as it not only boosted my confidence but also allowed me to gather feedback from professionals in the industry; it gave me a goal to work toward, something to keep in mind every time I use my camera. During my time in secondary school I was one of two founding members of a fitness club that we ran outside of school hours for all year groups. During this I learnt how to lead and direct groups of people, this had a positive effect on my personal development as I learnt leadership skills and how best to give directions to other classmates and ensuring instructions are clear. Last year I volunteered to work at 'Northamptonshire Animals Needing Nurturing & Adoption', during which I had learned how to work with a large group of people I’d never met before doing things I had no previous experience with. It helped me learn skills to work in a team paired with the leadership skills I had learnt previously.
Both my personal interests and academic ones have led to me pursuing a career in film. I hope that studying this course will give me time to further expand my knowledge leaning different segments of the film industry and find one that I enjoy that allows me to continue to express my interests and passion for film in a career that I am proud of. I believe that this course will allow me to achieve this goal.
