Setting My Career Goals in Nursing: Aspirations for My Future
I have always known that I wanted to be a nurse because of my innate compassion for others and my love for science. I put off that desire for many years because of the waiting list at technical colleges coupled with my thoughts that I was too old or that it was too late to invest 3-5 more years in education after I had just achieved a different healthcare related degree already. I may never truly identify the reason that I enrolled into nursing school to finally fulfill my dream as becoming an RN, but I have never felt more fulfilled going to work knowing I would be able to provide someone in need the comfort or care they deserved. Just after I enrolled and I started the nursing program my father kept telling me over and over that you get out what you put in. It was those words that drove me to give my all in nursing school, and it still carries through to my work ethic today. I decided during the time period of obtaining my RN license that nothing else mattered except finally achieving my life long goal of becoming a nurse to help others. I have now been an RN for almost two years and will be achieving my Bachelor’s degree in nursing. I now know that anything is possible if I really want to put the time into something.
My first goal for my future in nursing is to commit myself to lifelong learning. Learning does not end at graduation. I will commit to taking courses, attending conferences, obtaining additional certifications, and pushing myself to change up positions from time to time to ensure that I am always learning something new. I want this because I want to understand the rationale behind why I am doing things. This goal will keep me current, will advance my career and expand my effectiveness as a successful nurse.
My second goal for my future in nursing is to provide ongoing community service to those in need of medical assistance and are less fortunate. I want to be involved as a healthcare professional in more than just working as a nurse. I want to be involved in the nursing community where I can give back. I grew up with opportunities that others not have and now with obtaining my RN license have the honor and responsibility of being able to give back to others in more ways than I can imagine. I have always wanted to give back to those with less opportunity.
My goal is to travel with a group or organization and register with disaster registries or disaster response organizations. Not only would I be providing others with comfort and professional care, but I would also be enhancing my aptitude and preparation in the medical field. This would allow me the opportunity to interact with various people from different backgrounds and with each experience would be a strong reminder of why I chose to work in the nursing field. In conclusion, seeing my goal of becoming a nurse through to the end has allowed me to feel fulfilled professionally and personally. With that being said, I know the key to feeling fulfilled and being the best me I can be is to continue to establish important goals so that I remain on the path that will yield feeling fulfilled and knowing that I was being the best me I can be.
My goals of committing myself to lifelong learning and goal of providing ongoing community service to those in need of medical assistance will not only benefit my need to feel fulfilled, but also countless others of whom I will have the honor to provide comfort and care.
