My Interest In The Field Of Biomedical Engineering

I am Mirt Mehany. I am applying for The Whitmer Trudel Award for Academic Excellence in STEM. I am originally from Egypt. I am an international student and I am currently enrolled in 6 Engineering courses in third year Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson University. Also, I am on the Dean's List for my outstanding academic achievements. My current CGPA is 3. 920.

For as long as I can remember I've known what I wanted to do with my life. Math and Science have always been a passion of mine. I was always curious and wanted to know how things worked. When I was a toddler, I'd take apart my toys to see how they are working. As I got older, I was always playing with LEGOs. I'd build contraptions and try to imitate other samples as well. I was curious about everything around me and as I got older my questions have got more complex. Therefore, I planned on advancing to Engineering school as I believe math and science are the only way to understand how our world rotates. I have chosen Biomedical Engineering as it fills the gap between Engineering and Science. In details, it combines physical, chemical, mathematical, and computational sciences with engineering principles to increase the quality of healthcare diagnosis, monitoring and therapy. Moreover, it is a wide field as offers wide range of positions in universities, hospitals, labs, industry and regulatory agencies. Dedicating one's life to improve the lives of others is such a noble thing to do. As the humanity history is full of people who didn't hesitate to do such sacrifices, my aim is to do the same. As I am currently voluntarily assisting Dr. Muhammad Hasibul Hasan with his researches on mechanical properties of different materials (one of the papers we published is" Parameteric Effect on Surface Finish of 3D printed objects". ), I found out that researching is my passion. Upon my completion of undergraduate studies, I want to pursue a graduate degree and even a PhD in Tissue Engineering. This is because in Egypt, one of the main causes of premature death is Ischemic heart diseases, and I want to contribute my knowledge in finding an affordable treatment through tissue engineering. This will bring to people who are diagnosed with such diseases and their relatives a huge stress relief and serenity to their life. I know this first hand, since my father suffers from same disease. Sadly, most girls in my country don't get educated. Women don't have significant role as they are intimidated by the society that they are not good enough to pursue a university degree. I want to change this stereotype and encourage girls in my country by setting myself as a model. My aim is to spread the STEM message to create new generations with high critical thinking skills as well as the ability to be creative in solving different types of problems.

My reasons to apply for this scholarship has to do with lots of factors. However, the most important reason is financial. As it is common knowledge, the cost of life in Toronto has increased a lot. In addition to that, I am currently unemployed. I need all the support I can get, and I want to thank all those who provided this scholarship and work very hardly to help students like me. Receiving this scholarship will mean a lot to me, as it will allow me to focus on my studies and make me take a huge step towards my future.
