My Interests And Goals: Reflection Essay About Criminology

My interest in criminology was lit by the spark of early childhood experiences. Although I was raised in a very cozy, loving environment, I always wondered why people around me had ill wishes towards each other. Why people stole, assaulted, burglarized, and murdered. The tale told by my mom always blamed envy, jealousy, and greed. However, never was I a 100% satisfied by her answers. Not only was I looking for answers, but I was also always a fan of police officers. The uniform, badge, and gun they held never intimidated me, but rather made me look up to them as heroes. This predisposition I had towards the men in blue made me want to serve like them. It made me want to serve my community and fight crime. The mixture of curiosity towards crime and admiration of police work manifested into my interest in Criminology. This is what I going to talk about in this "My Interests And Goals: Reflection Essay About Criminology" paper.

Up until seven days before starting my first day as a college freshmen, I haven't had heard about an area of study called Criminology. Originally, I applied as a mechanical engineering major following the steps of my siblings, whom are all engineers. However, something deep down kept telling me that engineering wasn't for me. Although I was fairly adept at all the practical and theoretical aspects of Physics, Chemistry, and Math and an AP student in all three subjects, I wanted to embark on an endeavor that would lead me down a critical thinking path rather than a practical one. As aforementioned I aspired to be a police officer, but my refugee status has been my biggest obstacle. During my high school years, I developed great interest in psychology. At the same time, I still had the passion for police work, forensics, and CSI. Due to my mixed interest in human psychology and crime, I chose FBS as an emphasis in Criminology.

Professional Goals

Criminology is the pre-law path of choice for me. Not only does the material greatly interest me, but it also happens to be a great path to walk in preparation for a career as an attorney. At the same time, I don't want my graduate school choice to override my criminological interest. Accordingly, I see myself expanding in both areas of study and integrating the valuable skills I acquired from studying Forensic Behavioral Sciences with the information I will learn at law school.

I am a completely realistic and self-conscious person. I know the goals that I aspire to attain aren't going to come to me. It is going to take blood, sweat, and tears. It is going to require some sleepless nights and tiresome mornings. Above all, hard work beats talent nine times out of ten.

Obviously, we can't predict the future. However, we can dream and aspire as we wish. In 10 years, I see myself giving my career an amazing start with the amount hard work I'm putting in. Moreover, I see myself gaining valuable knowledge and skills the help me break away from any entity or corporation towards opening my own law firm.

Preparation

Out of all the respected professors that lectured, Dr. Skrapec was the most influential. The way that she described the responsibilities of a Forensic Behavioral Scientist and the opportunities that a Forensic Behavioral Scientist has were the nail in the coffin for me. According to Dr. Skrapec (2018), the testimony of a Forensic Behavioral Scientist is of great value in the court of law. Consequently, I think this area of study will be very valuable for my future career.

Corrections, Victimology, and Law Enforcement are all related to my option in some way or another. However, I believe that Corrections would contribute the most to my success in my field of choice. FBS is generally concerned with the diagnosis of the psychology of each crime. According to Dr. Clement (2018), Corrections is concerned with rehabilitation of offenders. However, to rehabilitate offenders, a diagnosis of the cause of the problem, whether developmental, psychological, or otherwise should be made. As for victimology, I will be representing victims as an attorney. The set of skills this options offers will come in handy. Moreover, I will be dealing with various law enforcement agencies. Accordingly, having some knowledge in the law enforcement area of study will enhance my experiences with those specific agenicies.

The first academic resource that I found to be really helpful is supplemental instruction. Mr. Jamal Washington (2018) himself provided that the students that attend improve by an average of a whole letter grade. Sometimes the material presented in class is too complicated to be grasped at the first glance, yet extra practice makes perfect. Second academic resource that I thought was very helpful was library resources. Ms. Vang Vang provided some really valuable information about how we can use the database to find articles and how we can resort to any of the librarians for research help.
