My Purpose To Build A Career In Microbiology
It was in my high school years that I discovered my inclination towards science and technology, and more specifically, biology. By the time I reached higher secondary, my proclivity towards pursuing Medical Science field became stronger. It was during this time that I was properly introduced to biology as a subject which enlightened my vision towards Microbiology. I am fascinated by this dynamic, constantly evolving field, and wish to further explore it through pursuing graduate education.
During my undergraduate tenure, along with studying the core curriculum of microbiology courses, I gained insight into Chemistry, Zoology, Microbiology, Environmental Science and Marine Science. I also worked in microbiology lab which is where I began discovering my penchant for microscopic examination of microorganism. Moreover, wet mounting, hanging drop techniques, staining of bacteria did under light microscopic examination and other experiments namely cultivation of bacteria, pure cultures and cultural characteristic, sterilization and disinfection, enhanced my depth knowledge in various bacteria. In chemistry lab which I performed Inorganic qualitative analysis of chloride, bromide, iodide etc. and also performed volumetric exercise and Organic spotting. In zoology lab I studied several types of marine animal’s identification, dissection of earthworm whole body system. In my third year, I was learning about the discovery of penicillin that first stimulated my interest in the behavior and destruction of microbes by the action of drugs; for example antibiotics. Learning about this giant leap forward in medicine and the way it transformed the treatment of disease inspired me to pursue the study of Microbiology. I am also fascinated by the compounds that go into medicines. in areas such as genetics and cell biology.
In addition, I have developed the ability to work effectively as an individual when drawing conclusions during experiments such as for coursework; or in a group for example, when recording results. To develop a greater understanding of Microbiology, I engaged with various type of samples i. e, urine and wound swabs, I prepared and viewed agar plates and microscope slides which allowed me to acquire a greater knowledge about the variety of skills and methods required in a Microbiology laboratory. All these experiences together exposed me to the exciting possibilities and research prospects in the field of computer science, and cultivated a desire to gain further skills and knowledge in this area. I took great pleasure in completing a Medical Laboratory Technician’s Training Course at Government Medical College, Surat from 2015 to 2016. During this time I learned medical science subjects such as Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology and Anatomy. In Training hours, I worked on hematology, blood banking, clinical pathology, histopathology and cytopathology in pathology department. Further, I also explored bacteriology, parasitology, virology and serology in microbiology department. I was examined and faced many type of patients who was suffering from cancer, tuberculosis, sickle cell anemia, AIDS which increased my structural identification cell test skill according to disease tests. I gained a great deal of knowledge about prevention and control on diseases.
Apart from academics, I have enjoyed participating in extra-curricular activities and events. During my schooling days, I was a part of the school skating and I won many trophies at district level. This interest for activities continued even during my undergraduate program. In my second year, I participated competitions namely handicraft and Best out of west in techno-cultural fest – Saptdhara at SRKI. After that, I participated in National Symposium on Entrepreneurship in Microbial Technology 2nd National Level Poster Competition on Applied Sciences & Technology at SRKI. These 2 years helped me to develop communication skills as well as technical abilities. In order to do give back to the society, I collected blood sample from diabetes patients and gave blood report in free of cost in school holidays. After my freshman year of college I worked as volunteer laboratory technician in Lok Samarpan Raktadan Kendra, Surat for 2 months which I gained deep knowledge of blood counting, Hemoglobin estimation and component separation. Completed my graduation in government medical college, I had a lot of job opportunities in my cities. Luckily I got job as Medical Laboratory Technician in Neopath Diagnostics Excellence where I learned and achieved immense knowledge about ELISA test, collection of routine test and Hematology blood counts. After completed one and half years of experiences I switched to Kiran Hospital for further explored my knowledge in various equipment and several disease patients where I handled AGD2160 fully automated clinical chemistry analyzer and serological tests. While an undergraduate course helps a student to understand the basics of a subject, a graduate study provides a more applied and research oriented perspective of the subject.
Considering the fact that my country, India, has been technologically improving exponentially, I want to take this opportunity to complete my graduate course in US and after gaining some experience I would like to return to India and utilize all the knowledge for its development. I am particularly interested in the master’s program at the North Carolina State University because it provides an acclaimed curriculum which will perfectly satiate my interests and broaden my intellectual horizons. I am highly impressed by the research work being conducted in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Further, it will be a most rewarding opportunity to interact with and learn from distinguished faculty members such as Dr. Tiffany Barnes and Dr. Denis Bahler. Both of them have their research areas in Artificial Intelligence which is why I would like to study under their guidance and provide some contribution towards their research work. Also, interacting with peers from diverse background will expose me to new influences, new ideas and new ways of doing things, which will enrich my study experience and contribute to my holistic development.
I feel that acquiring, imparting, and exchanging knowledge is the most enjoyable experience, and I am therefore looking forward to a collaborative graduate experience at the your University.
