My Views On A Career In Registered Nursing

As a senior in high school, it was important for me to began research on different careers so I have an idea of what I plan to study when it comes time for my to attend college. After completion of the detailed career assessment tool, provided by the courtesy of Grand Rapids Community College, I learned that I was headed in the right direction by already considering the medical field. The career that matched me best based on my answers to the assessment was Registered Nursing. That was truly a relief to me because I had already been thinking about pursuing an undecided medical degree.

The only thing that I did have decided was I did not want to study to become a Physician because, I do not want to be in school for that long. Registered Nurses have many different responsibilities such as assessing patients health problems and needs, developing and implementing health plans, and maintaining medical records. These tasks cannot just be done by anyone. It takes people with certain skills including the ability to communicate effectively, be flexible, think critically, pay attention to details, and the desire to learn. These skills will really be put to work with any type of fast paced career such as nursing. Nurses also have to have a passion for helping others physically, mentally, and emotionally. There well be instances where you come across patients who have have mental disabilities and other times where patients just have an attitude. These are both times when these skill will come in handy. I feel as if thinking critically and paying attention to details are the two most important, especially when a person's life and well being is in your hands. Failure to pay attention and think critically is also the easiest way to get blacklisted, meaning that you will be fired and prevented for finding another job elsewhere. In my opinion that would be a complete waste of a degree.

Nurses also have to find comfort in highly respected health facilities while doing a considerable amount of walking and standing. Some Days nurses have to bounce around from patient to patient without any time to even collect their thoughts or go on lunch. This is why it is important for nurses to have a passion for pursuing this career. Nursing degrees are a lot quicker to earn compared to other degrees in the medical field. In fact, about 66% of registered nurses attained their associates degree and only about 23% attained their bachelor's degree. No matter how much education you receive, you are still required to pass the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) to attain your nursing license. My plan is to attain my Bachelors of science in nursing and then pass the NCLEX to attain my license. Earning a degree in nursing is not the easiest of degrees but, it’ll pay off with the average salary of $78,100 per year in the state of Michigan. You most likely will not start out making that much but, you can definitely work your way up through experience.
