Overview Of The Main Components Of Traditional Media
The Media Industry is currently made up of many different areas such as television, film, radio, publishing, advertising, photo imaging and interactive media. These areas are called sectors. Each different sector makes their own special Media Texts. Theses text are all for a different purpose such as entertaining, informative or even educational purpose.
Traditional media are the names given to the industries that existed before the Internet. The Traditional Media include: Television, Radio, Advertising, Computer Games, Film, Magazines, Comics, Music and Newspapers.
Television was invented by Philo Taylor Farnsworth from San Francisco who successfully established the electronic television on September 7, 1927. Between 1936 and 1967 the television was purely black and white until 1953 when coloured television was available. The reason that the television was invented was because it was to raise curiosity, educational benefits, interests between people and can improve the world. Radio was invented In 1895 Guglielmo Marconi who proved radio communication. He sent and received the first radio transmission in 1895. After that in the 20th century Guglielmo conducted a successful experimental radio communications. Radio became popular in 1920 because families listened to the radio on a nightime for entertainment. The reason why the radio was invented was because it was important as it brought the world together and was a new way for the audience to communicate. Advertising started in the early 1920’s. The man who created pop up ads was called Ethan Zuckerman and he created one of the most hated forms of advertisements on the web. The main reason why advertising was invented was to inform customers about their particular products, to convince the audience to have the best service possible, to reveal their new products and to compete with other companies.
Computer Games were invented by William Higinbotham who was a Physicist who created the ‘first’ video game in October 1958, what was a simple game of tennis. The game was to inform people about the effects of gravity. After this many other people within 3 years created some sort of game activity and the main game was ‘spacewars’ but also another game was ‘Lunar Landing’. All these games were made to show effects on gravity and to be used for entertainment. Film was made by the Lumiere Brothers. It was a small hand held camera with a printer and a projector in 1895. This was the first beginning of film. After creating that the Lumiere Brothers created the first motion picture in black and white. It was filmed in 1895 but was not released until 1896. That same year coloured film was also released due to the early use of hand tinted films. It was created to set the mood. Film were used for entertainment and education to the public. Magazines have been around since the 1600s.
The first magazine called ‘Erbauliche Monaths- Unterredungen’ created by Johann Rist. This magazine is now known as one of the earliest examples of a modern magazine. More magazine were created and contained news, songs verses and gossips. Over 400 years later, magazines are now distributed everywhere and even online. Magazines were created for the public to read and for them to find interesting and also educational. Comics can be traced back to the Egyption times with images of hieroglyphics, tapestries and paintings, but the first narrative to combine images and words together was Rodolphe Topffer. This was in the 1800s. The idea of comics was to entertain and education the audience. Music was around in the 4000BC where the Egyptians created harps and flutes. In 3500 BC clarinets were developed, then trumpets were developed.
In 800 BC the first piece of recorded music was found and it was a religious hymns. Many records of songs that included vocals with certain instruments, this was the start of new music. Music was created to bring people together as a close community and for entertainment. Newspapers were created in 1666 in the London Gazette. It was the only official newspaper. The idea of newspapers were to inform, to give information on the news, to entertain the public and to provide everyone with new changes in the world. They were also created to help the public make decisions by providing a lot of facts.
