People Skills And Personal Attributes: The Compassion In Practice And The 6 C’S
I will be explaining the compassion in practice program and the 6 c’s. The compassion in practice was introduced in 2010 after the patients at Winterbourne View and mid Staffordshire hospital were treated badly and inhumanely. The 6 c’s were put in place to provide quality care. This practice has updated and changed to ‘leading change and adding value’. The LCAV is looking at improving health and reducing pressure on health services. We need to ensure that all services provide high quality care so that all service users are safe. Without efficiencies, a shortage of resources would hinder care services and progress. The 6 c’s consist of care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment. Care is about helping an individual but also improving the health of community care is needed at every stage of life and should be a priority. Compassion is about having empathy, dignity and respect for all people. It is also about having positive relationships and understanding the point of view of others. Competence is the ability to understand service users’ needs. It is about delivering effective care and treatment, to be competent you must be educated, experienced and trained. The next C is communication, communication is about talking but also listening to other people. It is the ability to build relationships and having a certain tone to your voice and a certain body language. Another one is Courage, courage is about doing the right thing, being brave and standing up for service users. It is being able to make difficult decisions. Finally the sixth C is commitment, it is about being loyal, dedicated and having motivation to support an individual for a long or short period of time.
Nusrat specialist epilepsy nurse must be competent as they must understand Nusrat needs to be able to deliver effective care and treatment. Being competent means the specialist epilepsy nurse must be trained and experienced in dealing with service users with epilepsy. A positive outcome of nusrat specialist Nurse being competent means that they will be given the appropriate care and means that she will be able to rely on and trust her specialist epilepsy nurse. If competence is not shown Nusrats Epilepsy would continue to be uncontrolled. Nusrats experienced advocate must be able to communicate with nusrat. Communication is about talking to people but also listening to people to build relationships with and from nusrat. The experienced advocate must use appropriate language that nusrat can understand. A positive outcome of Nusrats advocate being able to communicate means that she can be fully supported and has somebody to contact if feeling distressed. If Nusrats advocate did not have communication skills it would mean that Nusrat would not be able to build relationships with other people or her advocate and will feel alone and discriminated. Alice’s bereavement councillor should be compassionate. The councillor show Alice respect to build a relationship with her. The councillor should be able to understand Alice’s grief due to the loss of her husband and should try to put themselves in her shoes. A positive outcome of Alice’s bereavement councillor being compassionate is that Alice will not feel as if she has nobody to talk to and therefore will not feel the need to give in to her alcohol addiction. If the professional is not compassionate Alice will start to feel as if the councillor does not care about her mental state and will result in her feeling discriminated.
Alice’s Bereavement councillor must also be committed to Alice and dedicated to help her through her struggles. They should be committed to Alice regardless of if they’re counselling her for a long or short period of time. A positive outcome of Alice’s bereavement councillor being committed is that Alice will not feel the need to intoxicate herself with alcohol because she will have the support from her councillor to help her through hard times. A negative outcome of Alice’s bereavement council not being committed is that they will not show Alice the respect she deserves and she will not want to open up about her feelings as there will be no positive relationship between them. The C that should be used by Marias GP consultant is care. They should be caring to improve Marias health. They should advise her through every stage of her life and each stage should be an important priority. A positive outcome of Marias consultant being caring means that Maria can seek help without feeling as if her GP does not feel empathy towards her. If Marias GP was not caring she could feel alone and as if she did not have any support this would affect her mental health and would also impact her physical ability to carry out day to day tasks sufficiently.
Marias mother’s night sitter must be courageous. Having courage means that you do the right thing, by being brave and standing up service users and being able to make difficult decisions and embrace new ways of working. A positive outcome of Marias mother’s night sitter being courageous would be that they would be able to stand up for Marias mothers rights. If Marias mother’s night sitter was not courageous, her mother could suffer discrimination as she would not receive the help she needs as the professional is not standing up for her. Now I will be writing about People skills. People skills are the attributes that somebody working in health and social care should have. It is about the ability to provide quality care for service users. The personal skills a professional should have are patience, honesty, endearing trust, empathy, problem solving, humour, negotiation and flexibility. Patience is the ability to tolerate people and their problems without getting frustrated or annoyed. Honesty is simply about being truthful. By being honest you will be building a relationship with a service user. This also linked to endearing trust as this means you have the ability to get somebody to trust you, one of the main ways this can happen is by being honest. Empathy is all about the ability to share and understand the emotions of others and putting yourself in their shoes. Problem solving is about find a solution to a problem and being able to try alternative options if the first suggestion is not effective. A professional should be humorous, but know when finding a funny side to a situation is not appropriate. Negotiation is very important. Negotiation is supporting one side of an argument till an agreement is made. And finally flexibility, this is the ability to adapt your schedule to fit another person’s. Nusrats specialist epilepsy nurse must use problem solving skills. This means that they will be able to find solution to her problems. The nurse will ask questions to find out about Nusrats symptoms, information about her seizures and the length of them. They’ll use this information to find a solution to her uncontrolled epilepsy. One positive outcome of her specialist epilepsy nurse being a problem solver is that Nusrat will be able to try a selection of medication but if it is not effective, be able to suggest other medication accordingly. One negative outcome if Nusrats specialist epilepsy nurse was not problem solving is that Nusrats uncontrolled epilepsy would be ongoing and no solution would be found. Nusrats experienced advocate must also be patient. Patience is the ability to tolerate problems without becoming anxious or frustrated. A positive outcome of Nusrats experienced advocate being patient will ensure that nusrat does not feel distressed or feel rushed when trying to express her wants and needs. If Nusrats experienced advocate was not patient nusrat will feel pressured and discriminated and she may feel like a burden on the advocate. Alice’s bereavement councillor must be empathetic towards Alice. This means that they have the ability to understand Alice’s emotions by putting themselves in her shoes. A positive outcome of using this skill would be that Alice would not feel patronised by her councillor and will feel as if she is supported this could help Alice cope with the loss of her husband. If empathy was not shown too Alice, she could feel as if her bereavement councillor does not care about the pain she is feeling and will feel a desire to drink alcohol excessively to wash away her sorrows.
Alice’s volunteer advocate must be honest. Being honest means that you should speak the truth and not do things that are morally wrong. A positive outcome of Alice’s volunteer advocate being honest is that she would receive the care and support she needs. Her advocate will give their honest opinion on choices that Alice must make. If Alice’s advocate is not honest this would result in Alice not being able to trust her advocate and will mean that Alice will not be able to build a relationship with her volunteer advocate. Marias night sitter for her mother must be flexible. This means they should change their own schedule to fit Maria, they should be able to adapt their plans and prioritise their service user. A positive outcome of Maria’s mother’s night sitter being flexible would mean that Maria will feel as though she can rely on the night sitter to be available when she needs them. If Marias Mothers night sitter was not flexible this would mean that Marias performance at work would carry on being a concern because she will not be getting any support with her mother this had already been an issue and Maria needs rest bite time. Maria’s mother’s night sitter should also have the ability to gain Marias trust. Having trust allows you to build a relationship with somebody, Maria needs to trust that her mother is in safe hands when she leaves the night sitter to look after her mother. A positive outcome of the night sitter being trust worthy is that Maria will not fear that she is not being informed about the issues that may have occurred with her mother. Maria will feel as though she is being supported and that the professionals are taking her mother’s illness seriously. If Marias mothers night sitter is not trust worthy then this would lead to Maria not wanting to leave her mother in the hands of these professionals and this will impact her day to day life as she will not be performing to the best of her ability while at work.
Communication skills are about listening, talking, gestures and writing. Communication is how we build relationships with people. Professionals communicate with each other to share information about their service user. Communication skills include an appropriate tone of voice. This means that the words you say can have a lot more meaning with the say you say them, it’s important because if you talk too loudly this indicates that that you are angry whereas if you have a calm tone to your voice a person will feel more at ease. They also include appropriate language, Professionals should have the ability to change the way they talk to fit the situation and person they are dealing with somebody is saying to you. Active listening and responding is not just about listening it is about understanding and thinking of a response often using questions, gestures and clarifying what a person is saying helps with this skill.
Nusrats specialist epilepsy nurse must use appropriate language so that when Nusrat attends her appointments she understands everything that the Specialist epilepsy nurse is saying to her. A positive outcome of using the skill of appropriate language for Nusrat is that she will not misunderstand the information she is receiving. If appropriate language is not used with nusrat she may feel under pressure as she will not know enough about her condition due to the fact that she cannot understand the complex language of her specialist epilepsy nurse. Alice’s bereavement councillor must have active listening and responding skills. This means that they will listen to her problems and give her advice and reassurance that she is being supported. A positive outcome of Alice’s bereavement councillor having active listening and responding skills is that Alice will feel as if she has somebody to talk to when she is struggling and she will know that the councillor is actually paying attention to her and her problems.
Maria’s Head teacher at the school she works, should have an appropriate tone of voice when talking to Maria. The head teacher should try to understand Marias struggles. A positive outcome of Marias head teacher having an appropriate tone of voice is that she will not be fearful of her boss and this will enable her to come to be able to easily discuss ways that she is organising herself and her mother’s disabilities so she does not have to cope on her own. If the head teacher had a harsh tone of voice, Maria will feel as though she is under too much pressure and she will continue to perform badly at her job.
Observation skills are noticing changes in people and being aware of people because this could lead to you missing major details which would infer that a person is in danger or needs help. There are 3 types of observation skills you can take; measureable, change in behavioural and appearance and other general observations. Measureable observation is when you can carry out tests to see the changes by a medical professional like temperature or blood pressure. Observation with changes in behaviour and appearance, is noticing if somebodies physically appearance has change for example flushed face, sleepy or awake being happy or sad or noticing if they are eating properly. Other general observations are about safe guarding concerns and not missing important factors like abuse or neglect. Nusrats GP must be able do measureable observation this is so that the GP can keep an eye on her physical and internal wellbeing like the level of vitamins and nutrients in her blood.
