The war began with a brief but bloody clash between Filipino independence fighters and U.S. troops in Manila. It was the largest battle of the Philippine-American War. After their naval victory over the Spanish in the Battle of Manila Bay in May 1898, U.S. troops occupied the Philippine capital, Manila. Relations between U.S. troops and native Filipinos deteriorated as it became clear that the Americans were there to stay.
By 1902 U.S. troops had defeated the insurgency, though sporadic fighting continued until 1906. The U.S. retained possession of the islands (except for the Japanese occupation during World War II) until 1946.
