Project Proposal For The Building And Equipment Of A Sport Social Utility Centre For Youth Empowerment
Youths in Sanai has undergone challenges as many of them never made it through high schools and tertiary institutions. Most of them fled back home, doing nothing while engaged in drugs consumption, creating civil disorders in the community. This has been a serious concern from the elderly people in the community. Sanai Sports Association is looking at ways to addressed this and see that Sports is an active and out-going event, which youths would participate and keep their minds busy from taking drugs. The Youths can holistically develop new skills from the games such as social, physical, psychological and spiritual as life - long skills. On the other-hand, women and girls have opportunity to sell their items thus enhancing some income to the community. Further, project as such would engage the community fostering peace to other neighbouring communities. Hence, the association is seeking funds from Department of Community Development, Religion and Sports in Madang Provincial Government funding to finance this program as an annual event.
Introduction
Youths are important and largest group of people in any societies. Elderly people are figures while they do not perform all of the community’s duties. In contrast, youths are in the background doing every tasks that is for the benefit of everyone. Yet, we see that youths are not given the opportunities to participate in sports, attending to formal education, taking proper health care services, etc. In Papua New Guinea, majority of the youths are unemployed. They have no proper source of income and are being forced to become homeless and involved in illegal activities like stealing, rape, street vending activities, etc. Most times, youths are blame for the increasing of social issues as mentioned, however the capacities of the youths must not be underestimated. They may be insignificant but they are influential people. Imagine if every youths were given opportunities to utilise their abilities, the world would not be as it is today. The youths have the capacity to change the world to either better or worse depending on how we value and assist them to capitalise their strengths. They deserved to be freely using their abilities in order to experience the complete cycle of a human being. Therefore, this proposal intend to seek funds to run the Sanai Sports Association to help the Youths of Sanai and the nearby communities to explore and find their true self through sports.
The problem statement
Sanai Sports Association has noticed lacked of activities for youths that promote integral development of citizen, social inclusion and quality sports. The youths in Sanai and surrounding villages are lacking in both recreational and equipment to play sports. They are vulnerable to social problems caused by joblessness, sport is a sure way to meaningfully engaged and support them in today rapidly changing world. Therefore, the association want to empower the youths through sports in every Saturday and Sunday and foster their social skills so they can develop a sense of achievement and shun early pregnancy and marriage, drugs, alcohol and crime.
Justification
Sport is a viable and practical tool to assist in empowerment of youth. Engagement in sports gives youths opportunities for natural self- expression, self-confidence, relief tension, achievement, social interaction and integration as well as learning the spirit of solidarity and fair play. Team games promote positive social integration and facilitate the development of social skills in youths. Sports opportunities can teach health issues including HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases that is becoming a burden to the nation. There are no local coaches, so the association aim to train local people to become coaches to promote sporting activities and provide sports equipment to help the registered sporting clubs.
Vision
Sanai Sports Association wish to act as a role model to minimise social and ethical issues of the youths and to be the foundation of sporting activity of choice within Sanai Community and the nearby communities. The association also intend to provide a forum to learn new life- skills such as discipline, confidence, tolerance, cooperation and respect.
Mission
To provide leadership, guidance and strategic direction for the development of all youths within Sanai and nearby communities by promoting positive attitudes and a healthy lifestyle through family and community involvement in sporting activities. In deriving the mission, Sanai Sports Association asked three basic questions. The answers to these questions provide the cornerstones for the existence and the building blocks for the mission throughout the existence of the association.
Goals and objectives
The overall goal is to promote youth participation in sport that would provide various health and social benefits, as such would learn greater sense of empowerment expanding beyond sporting arena into their everyday living. Objectives:
- To increase youth participation in sport and other physical activities for sustainable development.
- To build good youth - capacity development to enhance local sports and physical activities.
- To increase high- level of participation in sport and physical activities for youth in rural areas.
Sporting equipment needed
In 2010 to 2017, Sanai Sports Association funded the sporting equipment and awards. However, this year the association needs sporting equipment such as footballs, volleyballs, volleyball nets, goal posts, trophies, shields, medals and awards to host the games from June through December 2018.
Cost of hosting the games
The annual cost of running the games over the past seven years stands around K10, 000. However, we try to increase the cost to K25, 000. 00 to run this year sporting programmes. The association anticipates improving the project and increasing the benefits for the community. Hence, the association is seeking funding and technical support from the Madang Provincial Government authority especially the Department of Community Development, Religion and Sports.
Monitoring and evaluation
Sanai Sports Association will monitor the implementation of the project to see that the goal, objectives and expected outcomes are accomplished. The Programme Coordinator and General Secretary will keep visiting the clubs and Community Sporting area once a month. Monthly reports will be written and evaluated on the project if there are improvements on the outcomes. At the end of the project, the youths and the communities will evaluate it by the way of openly expressing the views and suggesting ways to improve the community sports-project.
