Pros of Abortion: an Argumentative Viewpoint
Abortion: Right or wrong? The controversial issue of abortion has always been discussed from multiple perspectives with the most common view being that it leads to the loss of an innocent life. The viewpoints against abortion are however inconsiderate of the life of the mother and the impact that pregnancy causes to a woman. Such viewpoints try to justify the prevention of fertilization while opposing the termination of a fertilized egg. Of what difference does it make if one process leads to the loss of gametes that would otherwise have formed a baby? More so, abortion is a lifesaver to women who would otherwise see their dreams being shattered in the name of saving a life. In this regard, this pros of abortion essay revisits the advantages of abortion by arguing that every woman has a right to abortion.
To start with, the right to abortion is vital for women to achieve full potential in life. It is not uncommon to have women drop out of school because of teenage pregnancies or working-class women to leave their jobs because of unplanned pregnancies. Although the latter can be resolved through maternity leaves, there are also cases where women choose to stay at home and take care of their children only to later realize that they can no longer secure better-paying jobs. An unplanned pregnancy means that the woman will have an added responsibility for the rest of her life. With legalized abortion, however, the problem will be easily resolved as the women will have a legal right to terminate pregnancies in favor of their life choices. Illegalizing abortion has led to an increased number of illegal abortions, most of which threaten the life of the mother. Although family planning methods have been provided to avoid unplanned pregnancies, they are not 100% effective.
More so, different family planning methods have also been noted to have effects on women`s body due to changes in hormonal balance. For this reason, some women end up choosing the safe days approach only to end up in the same predicament as those with failed family planning approaches. In this regards, the search for restoring normalcy by such women land them in risky surgeries simply because the society can`t approve of what they are doing. Women have the right to decide what to do with their bodies. Pregnancy exposes women to multiple changes some of which might affect their shapes, e.g. expansion of the abdomen. Considering that physical appearance is a definitive feature of a woman, abortion may come in handy to save the situation. More so, women in modeling careers or those serving as public figures might lose significant profits due to the time that they have to wait before regaining their desired body shapes.
Finally, legalizing abortion is mandatory if gender equality is to be actualized. How will gender equality be achieved if men can impregnate women and run away from responsibilities yet women have to face the burden of raising a fatherless child for the rest of their lives? Without the legalization of abortion, gender equality will only remain to be a feminist dream. Women will soar to greater heights and get almost all desired rights but fail to overcome the bondage of financial instability that comes with the maintenance of undesired pregnancies. Although many might argue that children can always be given to foster families, the truth remains that the attachment between a mother and a child changes a woman`s life. Simply put, the maintenance of an unwanted pregnancy is the turning point for a woman`s life.
As evidenced above, illegalization of abortion has not only curtailed women`s ability to achieve their dreams but has also put women at a disadvantage in many other aspects. Additionally, the act has exposed women to health hazards due to lack of legal options that can help women attain their desires as far as pregnancies are concerned. Thinking of the disadvantages brought about by the illegalization of abortion; however, there`s no doubt that the rule is unfair against the female gender. For this reason, it is high time that the government realize that every woman has a right to abortion!
