Psychology – My Choice To Support People

I decided to pursue an undergraduate degree in Psychology to gain the knowledge and scientific insights needed to help and support others who are faced with whatever challenge they face in life. During my studies, I completed a practicum semester where I was involved in patients’ psychological assessments, diagnosis, and treatments under the supervision of a psychiatrist. I met patients with different mental health disorders such as: depression, neurosis, psychosis, bereavement, personality disorders, as well as patients who suffered from physical, emotional and sexual abuse. As a trainee, I also had the chance to interact with several patients with anxiety problems. I was able to help them manage their anger and apply several relaxation techniques such as breathing techniques. Through-out my educational journey, I have focused on enriching my mind through various means of education. I have learned how to think with an open mind, and communicate effectively.

Moreover, I grasped basic understanding of psychological, emotional, cognitive, and social factors in behavior. These skills have formed a strong foundation that I started building on during my internships, volunteer activities, and work. Last summer, I attended a “Social Emotional Health Workshop” and “Helping School Leaders Achieve Balance Workshop” at Momentous Institute in Texas, United States. During my stay, I attended interesting workshops such as “Mindfulness as a Relational Tool” and “Fear over the Life Span”, other workshops on different Play Therapy and Sandtray Therapy technique that further enhanced my knowledge and understanding in the field of psychology. In 2015 and 2017, I participated as a Facilitator at Yara’s COEXIST which is an interfaith program which usually takes place within the “World Interfaith Harmony Week”, an initiative under the supervision of His Majesty King Abdullah and officially recognized and observed by the United Nations. (what is your role as a facilitator?) My passion towards this field pushed me to pursue an online course "Science of Happiness" with the University of California, Berkeley. I was engaged with some of the most provocative and practical lessons from this science, discovering how cutting-edge research can be applied to my own life. I learned that happiness is linked to having strong social connections and contributing to something bigger than yourself. I was able to nurture my own happiness, by trying several research-backed activities that fostered social and emotional well-being, and exploring how my own happiness changes along the way.

Pursuing a postgraduate degree in Clinical Psychology will expand my knowledge in this field to be able to work with patients in need through clinical diagnosis and conducting therapy plans to treat them. I chose my three choices in the United Kingdom based on the quality of education, structure of the course (a mix between theoretical and practical studies) and multiculturalism. I know that I will learn something new each and every day which will only expand my horizon. This degree is what I need to add on to my extensive practical experience, knowledge, and passion to reach my ultimate goal.
