Reasons To Go To A Technical School Instead Of College

As students approach their senior year of high school they are bombarded with an array of decisions regarding their future. One of the biggest decisions is deciding what school they want to go to: college or technical college? Students overlook the advantages of technical colleges and focus on the traditional four-year college but there are several factors that prove technical school is better than college. Students that attend technical schools find it to be more affordable than going to a university and students graduate with at least 70% less debt than graduates from college. Not only is it more affordable, but a technical school also prepares you for a specific career in as little as two years. This saves you time by allowing you to earn a degree faster than it would take you if you went to a four-year college and this increases your chance of being employed early. Whatever choice you make you always want to make sure you can stick with it.

Time commitment is the most looked on factor when it comes to making this decision. Some people are fit to stay in college for four years or more and some are not. You have to look at how long you will be in college and how long it will actually take you to complete your major or career program. This matters a lot if you think you are ready to graduate and start your career because multiple students at four-year colleges sometimes take longer than four years to graduate but at a technical school you will be done in as little as two years. Students find it to be a waste of time to spend so long in college and choose to go to technical school instead because it gives them the hands on skills they need and they do not spend more time than they need to. Unlike universities, technical colleges make it a point to teach how to find employment, as well as develop the skills needed for employment. These can include resume and interview skills, job search techniques, communication skills, etc.

While in universities and colleges classes with hundreds of people are common but in technical colleges you’ll find much smaller class sizes allowing you to focus and learn while getting help more often and when you need it. Students avoid college all together because of the cost and fear of student loan debt. If you’re worried about the cost of college and how you’ll afford it there are nonprofit technical schools and they a have much lower tuition than the average four-year institution. Usually four-year college students graduate with debt but Technical school graduates who started school at the same time, however, could have already been working for two years and spent two years less in tuition costs.

Technical schools have been underrated and frowned upon and that undeserved stigma needs to change. Since the cost of advanced education is leaving people with massive amounts of debt more students look for a different path to a career and this involves people not going to college. Even though students with a bachelor’s degree or higher have a larger earning potential than those who stopped at a high school diploma. If you can get a job as soon as you graduate you will still have to spent most of your time paying off debt and that can be stressful. When you graduate you already have a higher probability of getting a job because people hiring you will see on your résumé that you already have hands-on experience rather than if you went to college and did not get an internship it would be harder to find a job. When comparing a technical school education with a college education, it is important to consider how likely you are to find a job after earning your degree. Four-year college graduates find themselves with limited job options after graduation, some never find a job and are then forced to take jobs they do not want.

One of the main reasons to go to a technical school instead of college is that you are getting into the workforce a lot quicker and you are qualified in that area. Even the general education classes at a technical school relate to your career. Though these classes may not be as hands-on as the actual core courses you take, they still provide you with the foundational knowledge needed to succeed in your choice of profession. The diversity of the programs at technical schools keeps growing and no matter what your passion may be, you will always find the perfect program for you in a technical college. You may not know it but when it comes to salaries, those who receive their trade school diplomas earn salaries just as high as those with their bachelor’s degree when they begin working. When a college graduate applies for a job that a technical school graduate is in, they are most likely to not get hired because they already have someone working in it and even with a bachelor’s degree you do not have experience in that field but the technical school graduate already does prior to them get hired so they are more likely to stay in the profession longer instead of the company trying to find someone else to the do the same job. Some college graduates might make more than technical school graduates but considering that they spend every month paying off student loans this brings down their salary quickly. Although, as a technical school graduate you will be in the workforce two years longer than a student going to a four-year college so by the time you finish paying off your debt, college students would just be starting with theirs.

There are advantages to going to college of course, but the advantages and incentives you get from going to a technical school are even more. People say you will make more money going to college but most likely you will not use your major and if you really want to make more money you would have to go back again and apply for your graduates degree. That is even more time you could have spent making money and that can be an even bigger waste of time for you. Not to mention students drop out of four-year colleges every semester more proof that a traditional four-year college is not fit for everyone. If you haven’t yet, you should look into more technical schools and consider applying.
