Reflection And Expectations From Global Online Workforce (GLOW) Programme
Last Monday, my friends and I, the first year students from School of Computing were given a talk from Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) on Global Online Workforce (GLOW) Programme. The talk was held at Dewan Seminar by En. Muhammad Ihsanudin Bin Jamhari from 11. 00 a. m. till 1. 00 p. m. Basically, the talk was mainly about how to generate digital income through crowdsourcing by using soft skills and services. By the end of the talk, I get to learn and gain so many knowledges on how to use technology in a good way especially to earn money by using so many global platforms provided nowadays. To begin with, crowdsourcing can be defined as a method of gaining digital income whereas the work is offered and done digitally on global platform. Before this, GLOW is formerly known as e-Rezeki whereas GLOW is one of the programmes provided by MDEC as one of the government agency under Kementerian Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM).
One of the main purposes of GLOW is to introduce freelancing as an alternative career for Malaysian citizens through global digital income platform. Other than that, the programme also aims to provide a support system for digital worker so that they will stay motivated and committed while earning digital income. From what I have listened, there are so many benefits can be gained from the programme and one of them is definitely the opportunity to earn monthly digital income with a flexible work time where the digital workers can work anywhere at any time. For instance, the talker himself is a graduate from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia (UteM) in Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and also a graduate from Univesiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Master of Education (Technical and Vocational Education). But currently, he is doing freelancing as a Graphic Designer in an international platform because he prefers more flexible work scope rather than his previous carrier. Though he is doing freelancing, he is doing great with stable income every month. For this programme, MDEC has done so many ways to get people to join them for GLOW programme and one of them includes through social media. GLOW has its own social media such as Facebook, Twitter and also Instagram so that people can easily reach them and keep updated with the programmes offered.
Other than that, people can also go to their official website to find out more about the programme. Furthermore, the programme is open for those who has digital experience includes those with IT or ICT skills such as programming and graphic design. Plus, those with linguistic and foreign language skills are also welcome to join the programme. GLOW are also looking for freelancers who work both offline and face-to-face. Subsequently, there are so many people with related skills who can join the programme, it is on them either to grab the chance or let it pass. As for me, this programme did give a great impact to Malaysia as nowadays there so many university graduates who cannot find any job they favour given the requirement. GLOW can be one of the platforms they can use to work and apply their skills while waiting for the right job. With that, the problem such as unemployment which is rising currently can be reduced with the participation in the programme. Moreover, GLOW can also improve the economy state in Malaysia given that it provides a platform for those with stable income also those who are jobless to gain a steady income every month.
As a student, I honestly think that this programme is interesting and I am really interested to join it as I am majoring in Computer Science (Data Engineering) whereas with this, I can apply my skills learnt throughout my studies especially programming while getting a fixed income every month. It is truly a golden opportunity where I should grab and it would be a waste if I let it go without trying to participate at all.
To summarize, I really hope that MDEC will hold more talk like this or even an exhibition as before this I am not exposed with this kind of knowledge and I did not know that there are so many opportunities offered with decent salary where it only require skills and knowledge on certain things. Above all, this programme really inspire me in so many ways that I never realized with the way the speaker himself giving the talk and also the list of programmes offered regardless the consequences. In a nutshell, I believe that this programme has already helped so many people out there and people should really grab the chance because throughout my life, I do believe that good thing will never come twice unless you really have power on it.
