Reflection On McAllen City Commission Meeting

I viewed a meeting of the city commission in a video that was taken place in McAllen, Texas on the month of August of this year. This meeting was presented for the mayor to hear about different issues that have been happening in our state. There were 4 proclamations that were library card month, national prevention month, the national day of remembrance for murdered victims and rezone areas.

Library card month is to help teens and children to do their homework, and to help them pursue their careers or lifestyle. They had people dressed up as the Incredibles known as Disney's Pixar superhero family movie, they teamed up with various libraries across America to promote the library card. Children and teens will do their homework with the help of the study zone. Anybody with a library card can go on their free one on one online help from professional tutors to have something incredible! I believe this is a great way of helping students, teens, and children that are going to school and studying. It helps a lot of people by just signing up for a library card because most people don't have the money to buy books or buy a computer that that's what's used now in days. So, it is great that now teens and children will have the access to go to a library with no need to buy a book or computer just by signing up for a library card.

One of the topics that were commonly brought up was named was national suicide prevention. This month is dedicated to preventing the suicide and they are naming it the National Prevention Month. Some people went up to speak about suicide for example, there was this girl that was a survivor of suicide she talked about how we must be strong and talk with someone of what we are feeling because if a person doesn't talk about what they are feeling and what they are planning on doing the people won't know that their attempting suicide. The next example was when a mother went up to speak about her son that had attempted suicide on the year of 2013. It looked like she was trying to contain herself from crying and it's understandable because it must be super difficult to lose a son or daughter. She talked about how some people don't want to talk about suicide but how she thinks it's important for people to talk about suicide and what people had passed through regarding a loss of attempted suicide. I believe that people should speak up if they are feeling depressed or are going through something that could be maybe bullying death threats, or harassment. If the person does not speak how could we prevent a suicide? A person should go to a parent or family member who they trust so that they could help them out and prevent these types of situations. They should be fewer suicides if a person could prevent it and help the person that's trying to commit suicide. Suicides are caused by thoughts, personal problems, income and a variety of more things.

Another topic that was mentioned was of murdered victims. There was a man that went up he talked about how his brother was murdered by his sister in law that had mental illness and up with him went mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and other family members that were related to more victims that were murdered also. He talked about how some people go up to them and give them pity he said that he didn't want that and none of the people that were upfront wanted that. Instead, they wanted compassion and to give them the respect they deserve. They don't want to be part of a survivor club that bonds together because somebody has died of a victim murder crime. Whenever they got the death notification they ask the courts and people involved to respect them and not feel pity for them and just give them compassion. It's important for them to have the voice and to help other people that had gone through something terrible of losing a family member and to prevent another homicide and to tell them that they are not alone. I believe it's a good thing that they are coming together to help other people that have been through something like them. A murder must be so difficult for the family's victim I haven't passed through something like that, but I believe that it must be one of the hardest things to feel and go through. There should be something done of how to prevent a murder event maybe there should be some officers that could know if something fishy is going on to have them on the close by wherever something bad is going on.

The daughters of the American revolution of Rio Grande chapter in McAllen Texas gave thanks for having constitution week and for being the 230th anniversary of the constitution of the United States of America document. They will celebrate this event by the president of the United States of America through September seventeenth and September twenty -three 2018 as constitution week. This is a very famous document that we talk about in history class and you search it up in google and it will be there. The document is the signing of the constitution of the United States of America, is about laws and cultures that were passed. I believe it's a great way to remember the constitution of the United States of America document. Especially because of how much time has passed it has been ages and past lives since the constitution document was made. The daughters that assisted had a great gesture of assisting this court meeting a giving thanks to the people in the meeting. There was also a different topic, but this topic didn't really interest me as it was about rezoning a family residential home, but I didn't quite understand what the woman was talking about. What I got with the man that went up was that he wanted to rezone the property of ups to c-4 he presented sight plan about how the landscaping what looked where the trees would be at and etc. one of the city commissions mayors are asking for a put so that they could be sure that it won't be used for the wrong reasons. As he said that a couple of years ago this happened to them for not having a put. I believe that the man should go for the put because that would be a safer way to rezone the property and he should make an agreement with the city commission. Therefore, if he doesn't get the put that that would mean that he wants to use the property for the wrong reasons and not for the right ones. I liked the idea of rezoning the property to c-4 because he said that people are going to have full -time jobs and well that's not easy to have or to look for in this city.

In conclusion, this meeting talked about different topics that we don't usually talk about, but we should talk about them they are important to us students, adults, and children. I thought that national suicide day remembrance was a good topic because it will help us know how we could prevent a suicide maybe we could be there with a person that's having suicidal thoughts and prevented if they give us signs. Sometimes its hard to know if a person has suicide thoughts but they could show signs such as being distant from their friends or family, by not doing the things the used to love doing, by being in bed every day and not going out. So, we could use everything I just said to prevent this so let's do it lets help people that are having personal problems or financial issues because those could be the most important signs of attempting suicide and we could not even know. So, I am for its people should talk about suicides to prevent them. Also, the national day of remembrance for murder victims was also a topic that interested me because it also helps people and helps us understand how the family members feel and what to do with something like this happens.

I believe this has to be a hard situation to pass through that's why something should be done to prevent murder victims I get into their shoes I could imagine how its going to be after the victims death like the man told us that just because they don't cry it doesn't mean that they are not mourning or suffering their child's, brother, sister, or family member. They remember them most when a birthday is coming up when a holiday or family event those events are right around the corner will especially holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas it must be super difficult to pass it without them. Some things are right some things are wrong but at the end of the day everything works out by working together. This meeting was very helpful for me to understand what happens and to prepare myself in case of something like this happens.
