There have been wonderful inventions that has shaped the world in a both the good and bad ways. Some inventions have evolved to become the biggest and most useful inventions in modern days some have been the building blocks for even better inventions. The invention of a telephone is one of the most significant inventions present in this era, it has advanced today’s life and turned communication into a very simple task. This essay looks deeper into the invention of the telephone and how it has evolved to become the most significant invention today.
The invention of a phone
Various scientists and engineers claim to have invented the telephone but, Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) is the credited one. When he was eleven (1858) he came up with a thought of transmitting multiple message over distant users using a single wire, while trying to achieve his idea using 60 feet wire he heard the sound of a plucked spring. He started believing that he can send human speech over a single wire. He got assistance from several scientists such as Thomas Watson. He Started by transmitting a current using a single wire, a few days later he was able to transmit human speech. Bell spoke the first words through a telephone saying “Mr Watson come here I need you” using a single wire. He tirelessly worked on improving his invention and two months down the line he created a magnetic telephone which is the precursor for the modern phone. Ever since that day the telephone has evolved and advanced to become one of the most significant inventions in the modern days. They have vastly evolved in looks, portability, features and functionality.
Early phones were used for voice calls only, gradually it became the building block of many inventions. Manufactures realized that many other technologies and computer system can be summed up in just one device. Its purpose was shifted from voice caller to a faxer and address book then a multimedia that is when it was given the name Mobile phone. In 1983 the Motorola Company created the Motorola DynaTAC 800 X this was considered the first phone due to its size in contrast to the modern computer sized phones that existed back then. Century by century the size and functions of mobile phone changed. It has changed from brick size to a smaller device, the size of the screen has increased and the keyboard buttons decreased to on-screen keyboard which only appears on the screen when it is needed. Better, technical developments were made. The likes of text messaging, internet access, camera, video calling, games and music on the phone were introduced as the parts of the technical developments.
In the 21st century the invention of a telephone became more significant due to the introduction of smart phones. These are modern phones which uses a robot with human features, the android system these robots behave like humans. They have been programmed to behave like humans for example, iPhone has an app which allows you to do anything you want on the phone without touching the phone but by just talking to the phone, SIRI. Smartphones came up with massive features. Social media, these are applications that allow social interactions example, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram. Better internet access, search engines such as google. Modern phones are like computers. Cell phones have summed up various technologies into one device they are no longer only used for phone calls only they are multifunctional devices. They have cameras, People use them to take pictures and keep memories, and some phones have even better quality than real cameras. They have time, calendar and note technologies, helping you to stay organized and stay on time. They have music player and FM, music can be played and downloaded on the phone. They have go/ogle, this is one of the phone’s best features it allows people do to researches using the phone. They have Bluetooth, this allows media sharing between different individuals. In the dark it can be used as a torch. Weather updates, People can check weather updates on the internet. Cell phones have many other wonderful technologies and applications such as You tube, alarm, games, Gmail and sound recorder.
Statistics show that in 2016 over 62. 9% of the world’s population which is about 16. 42 million was using Smart phones and the percentage was expected to grow to 69% in 2019 indeed it is 2018 now and every house hold owns over 3 to 4 smart phones with androids app.
Cell phones play a huge role in our lives, although they may sometimes have negative impact on the society they have impacted our lives in a good way they brought unity and diversity within the society. It is the most significant source of communication within the society. It has made communication easy and quick. They allow us to extend the presence of internet and communicate to friends and family. The presence of cell phones allows us to keep in touch with family members and friends through text messaging, picture sharing, email and other texting apps even if your friend or family is overseas, in hospital or away at work. It has brought greater access to modern apps. The introduction of apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, snapchat, mxit and twitter where a text is sent and the other person and they receive it automatically at the same time. This apps made socializing very easy, one can find another individual by just searching their name. People can connect when they need service that can save their lives. They have increased the flow of information. The society can share news and updates that are not able to make it on magazines and television, especially in rural areas where some houses do not have TVs, radio and cannot buy magazines. People sometimes use cell phones for emergency like flat tire, in cases where an individual is lost and when there is a natural disaster.
Some companies have included panic buttons on their phones so in case of emergency people can be reached and responders can be reached too. Sometimes when you forgot to turn your stove or tab off you can call your neighbours and tell them to turn it off for you. They offer security within the society. One of the positive impacts of cell phones on the society that is not given the spotlight is that they improve literacy. Through texting you do not only get communication pleasure but good grammar and spelling skillsMobile phones have vastly grown the economy. The developments of smartphones saw communication equipment transform into smaller and smaller consumer services.
The mobile phones contributed an estimated $2. 4 trillion to the international economy in 2013. They have decreased the cost of communication. They allow faster communication thus products can be advertised and go broad faster, this allows businesses to grow. Developing countries can get information easy on the phone for researches thus phones made information available to the developing countries. The creation of mobile based services such online banking and allow people and companies to make payment wirelessly. Due to the increasing rate of demand of phones more and more workers are needed meaning that the need for cell phones create employment thus reduce poverty.
Good things come with some negativity. Although cell phones might have grown the world and stimulated the economy as well as the society in a good way, they also have a negative impact. Cell phones are a threat to our health they can cause brain cancer and many other health problems such as eye problems, increase stress level, cause anxiety and hamper your thinking process. They interrupt human Interaction, lately people walk on the streets with their hands and eyes glued to their phones this unable them to interact with other induvial thus they miss out opportunities. This is a thread to their safety as one might get hit by car while on the phone. Cell phones have interrupted with studies, many students and learners these days are always on their phones, some never make up time to study thus missing out on their studies.
