The Complexity Of The Question Of Who I Am

Who am I is probably the hardest question a person can ask. I am a pretty brown-skinned girl named Jonae Hooks. I am 18 years old, and I currently attend Tyler Junior College as a Biology major so that I can become a pharmacist. But do those things truly define who I am? What really defines who I am is the opinion of others around me, the vibe I give off to others based on my character. I am Christian. Before I started here at TJC, I was a youth leader at my church for two years. My goal in becoming a student leader was to grow stronger in my faith, but eventually, it became so much more. While I was going on mission trips and retreats, it was not long until I realized that was helping others grow in their faith as well. People would approach me for advice, prayer, or even just to have a friend. I took on the responsibility of spreading knowledge through inspiration and tutoring. The students eventually looked up to me as I once did to the leaders I had when I was growing through youth group.

Although my Christian life is a huge part of me it is not the only thing that defines who I am. I am versatile and can adapt to so many things, people, and different lifestyles. I fit in anywhere. I was born in Oklahoma and then I lived in Ohio, Las Vegas, California, and now I am here in Texas. Moving all over the United States meant new schools, new friends, new surroundings, and even new social norms and subcultures. The “usual” was always only temporary. However, as I grew older and started living for myself, I realized that moving all over the place came with several benefits, which included being unchained. I say this because it is really crazy to me how many people are fascinated at how many places I have lived or because I am not afraid to relocate and pursue new opportunities due to fear of losing everything. My mom always told me “if it is meant to be it will come back in due season”, so why not live every day like it is your last. Some say that everything that goes up must come down, so I could say plenty more positive things about myself, but I am argumentative.

I am a person who has and expresses strong opinions and will argue them even if my opinion is inaccurate. I believe that I have become this way because I believe people with strong opinions are significant to others. It is all about character. I know that having a strong opinion is not such a bad thing until you are like me. I have a combative attitude and can debate about any little thing. Often times, I say the things that come up in my mind, it without thinking twice about whether I should or not. Even though I am super pugnacious, I've been told many times, “you should be a lawyer”, and “how do you come up with this stuff?” Honestly, I don't know, but it is a good feeling to know that others give what I would call a flaw a positive outlook.

So I try to answer this question myself, but I am a complex person. I have answered this question truthfully and thoroughly as I possibly could today, but by tomorrow, the answer could be totally different. Who am I? I am whom I portray myself to be to the people around me.
