The Conflict In Syria – The Biggest Humanitarian Crisis Of Our Time
A civil outbreak erupts between the people in Syria. After enduring decades of authoritarian government in Syria, anti-government protesters march for freedom and dignity. A growing humanitarian crisis in Syria has been in progress for the last 8 years causing fathers, mothers, children, and elderly’s lives suffer. Syria’s conflict developed from peaceful protesters to which triggered a violent ongoing internal conflict. The Syrian conflict began on March 15, 2011. A peaceful uprising called the “Arab Spring” raised their voices in demand for better conditions, due to high unemployment and the lack of political freedom. Filling streets with thousands of Syrians demanding democratic reform. Protests first erupted in Daraa, a small southern town, due to young boys graffiti on the walls, conflicting on the poor conditions they are in. “. . . were met with deadly force by the authorities. The unrest spread, with police and security forces using physical force, tear gas, water cannons and live rounds against protesters in a bid to crush dissent. ” In order to limit the protests that were occurring in Aleppo and Daraa, police started mishandling them with physical violence and arrests. Reducing the protesters caused more protests to occur in different states in order to overthrow the president and its corrupt government. In support of this “But the wave of killings and arrests, torture and humiliation targeting people who were not even involved in the demonstrations drove many who steered clear of politics to join the protest movement”. For this reason, government actions drove more and more Syrians to oppose for their own president and its fraudulent government. Later, many believed the Assad administration was killing its own people and violating their human rights.
The war in Syria has now entered its 9th-year causing a regional humanitarian crisis both inside and outside the country. Although its roots lie in peaceful protests against the government, it has become something much more complex and caused many complications around the world. Since the very start, President Assad has one objective: staying in power. And, he would face anything that gets in his way to achieve it. He would use indiscriminate bombing to using chemical weapons to reduce the people that oppose his position and how he would handle situations with violence, which caused many innocent lives that had nothing to do with war, and led them to run away from their home country. Over the years, Syria’s war has been brutal to its own people leaving families broken and hopeless. It has caused many to flee their homes to seek a better life, acceptance, and new opportunities, but also to feel safe. Millions of refugees have been scattered around the world searching for a place to welcome them in and accept their poor conditions. “More than half of the country’s population - have been forced to flee their homes. Of the 12 million displaced, more than 5. 5 million have moved abroad and registered as refugees. ” The number of refugees who have fled the country to seek asylum in different regions has threatened the country’s economy due to a large amount of refugees who are in need of humanitarian assistance and a roof over them. Life for them is a daily struggle, trying to assimilate to a new foreign country. “In some towns, the population has doubled. This has been putting a lot of pressure on health services and educational services. ” This mass immigration puts even more tension on Syria's foreign affairs. If the refugee crisis continues it will cause more damage to the Syrians and the war will not have an end to it. Syria’s crisis is escalating rapidly. More countries have been involved in order to help and stop the conflict that has been continuous for 9 years but failed in showing support due to their interest in Syria’s resources but not out of courtesy. Since this war has begun it has been an international battlefield and few countries have shown support and solidarity to the Syrian people. “Assad now faces the challenges of rebuilding the country…”.
For this reason, President Assad is trying to better Syria but in order to accomplish his goal, he needs financial support, after rebel fighters have been completely gone. Syria needs the right resources to begin rebuilding. In order for the united nations to provide resources to Syria. This situation is classified as a crisis and must be treated as one. “First, U. S. aid should increase to fund programs that empower refugees to be economically independent rather than indefinitely dependent on international aid. ” One way Syria’s crisis would get better is if the U. S. used its power to provide lifesaving support for both in and out of the country. A step by step process is needed in order to bring back refugees and make Syria free from collapsing. Support from all other countries should be given to the dire people in need. A ravaging civil war has created an unstable climate in Syria and is considered as the biggest humanitarian crisis of our time. 8 years of a crazy, selfish and illogical war, in which souls, hearts, and minds have been destroyed. A war that dreams of an end. That started with a simple protest to a civil war. This should be a lesson for other countries to learn from and a history that will forever be remembered.
