Prime Minister Of Canada: My Policies
Currently Liberal Party dominates the Government of Canada and current Canadas Prime Minister – Justin Trudeau is also part of Liberal Party, this gives Liberal Party a lot of control to influence their ideology. Ideology is a set of ideas that explains and evaluates social conditions, helps people understand their place in society, and provides a program for social and political action. Which is really powerful, because government carries ideology sets its own policies, creating foundation for the society, and its values.
Currently majority of the Canadas population supports Liberal ideology, which is liberalism, that’s why Liberal Government was elected. According to Richard Arneson’s “Liberalism and equality” (2015), liberalism as ideology doctrines that people have moral rights to core individual freedoms, freedom of thought, expression, and culture, freedom of organization and assembly and public protest, right to a fair trial, wide individual liberty to live as one chooses provided one does not harm others, and rights of private ownership of resources, freedom of contract and market trading, and careers open to talents on a non-discriminatory basis. But, if I was a Prime Minister of Canada I would base my policies on conservative ideology. Meanwhile, liberalism sounds as very promising, positive and righteous, it has cons too. It states that person has individual freedom and sense of autonomy, but this kind of freedom is not complete or absolute, so it is prevented by others from doing what person could otherwise do, and person to that degree is unfree.
Another weakness of liberalism that it is heavily based of western society values like capitalism, democracy, freedom of speech and individuality, which is not applicable to other countries, like countries of more eastern world, their religions and traditions. Liberalism was always about the change: in society, economy, government structures, etc. Liberalism ideology states that we have to change in order to grow, so we can improve, which will help us to live in better society. But rapid changes happen and sometimes these changes are unexpected or not even necessary. If you have well functioning and healthy society and government, you wouldn’t need rapid unexpected changes, this will disrupt whole system. These are some of the reasons why I would go with the ideology of conservatism, if I was in the position of power. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, conservatism is a belief that society is not merely a loose collection of individuals but a living organism comprising closely connected, interdependent members, thus favour institutions and practices that have evolved gradually and are manifestations of continuity and stability. Government’s responsibility is to be the servant, not the master, of existing ways of life, and politicians must therefore resist the temptation to transform society and politics.
Conservatists strongly support traditional values, which are: family, religion, free trade, limited government, hard work and personal responsibility. I chose to go with conservative ideology, because it shares the same ideology values that I believe in. I think conservatism is beneficial for the society as it preserves our traditional core values and heritage as human beings, and also allows us to be individual and function as a society as a whole at the same time. For example, like traditional family values with traditional “old school” structures, rules, roles, etc. This is values of marriage, monogamy, respecting older people (seniors), like respecting grandparents; values of ethics and moral values: honesty, respect, kindness, sympathy and empathy. Also, religion traditional values like: Judeo-Christian faith, with the conservative position on abortion, sex education and religion practices: like attending church for mass and praying. As for limited government, this means that government doesn’t not control all of the areas of persons life, it has limited access and range of powers, and is functioning to serve and represent the interests of the society. This does not mean that government is weaker, it still powerful, but it strictly references to the Constitution, a set of laws contain rules, this gives people more freedom. With the limited control from the Government, comes free trade. According to The Canadian Encyclopedia, free trade is when "a group of two or more customs territories in which duties and other restrictive regulations of commerce. . . are eliminated on substantially all the trade between the constituent territories in products originating in such territories. " Which means that goods can be traded with low limitations and restrictions, or might not have them at all. Free trade will promote better development, especially in poorer areas and will create more wealth overall. As lowered or no tariffs and taxes on goods will make them easier, cheaper and more accessible to buy, which will create more demand, and probably more jobs to make those goods to supply the market.
Meanwhile, Liberals spend a lot of tax payers’ money on social and welfare programs, they believe that everyone should be treated equally. Conservatives don’t support these kinds of programs, they believe that they are not that effective for society. They believe that people should seek for employment themselves and work hard for better living in society. They understand that it cost a lot of taxpayer’s money to fund all these programs and don’t want people living dependant on government, but rather only help those who are in need. Not all people were born equally, and not everyone has access to health services, education, housing and opportunities.
So only people who are in a disadvantage should have access to these kinds of programs. As wasting more money that government can afford, we slowly putting country into gaining debt. In conclusion, if I was Prime Minister of Canada I would go with conservative ideology, as I think it would really benefit the country and its people.
