The Impact Of Age And Gender Factors On A Person’S Dream
Have you ever wondered if your age or gender can affect your dreams? Majority of people tend to forget what they dreamt about. Other people tend to remember all of their dreams these people are called high recallers. This is because of the more “fascinating” or “interesting” your dream than most likely your going to remember it. Such as a nightmare, the scarier it is the more you're going to remember it or wake up. Your memory also takes part in the cerebral cortex part. Cerebral cortex plays a role in memory, thought, language and consciousness. So it's like the cerebral cortex chooses if you're going to remember or not. My science question is does age or gender affect if you can recall your dream or not. There are many different types of dreams such as Ordinary Dreams, Daydreams, Nightmares, Lucid Dreams, Recurring Dreams, and Prophetic Dreams.
An Ordinary Dream are kind of like real life experiences but in a different experience. A daydream is dreams that distisarct you from what's going on. A nightmare is or can be a fear or a scary dream that usually tends to wake you up. Lucid dreams are dreams that you know your dream and have the ability to control it. Reccuring dreams are dreams that happen alot but are not exactly the same. You spend your life about 1 third of sleeping and dream of 25% of that time. Dreams occur during REM-sleep. Rem stands for rapid eye movement this is when your eyes move around while you sleep but the rest of your body becomes paralyzed. Which stops you from acting out your dreams. If this did happen you are likely to fall off your bed. Dreams have reported when the sleeper is in Non-Rem sleep.
First comes Non-Rem sleep; it is easy to wake you up then it turns into a light sleep where your heart rate slows, your body temperature drops and your breathing slows. Rem sleep stands for rapid eye movement in this stage it is hard to wake someone up in this stage because they’re in a deep sleep. During REM sleep the brain turns those short-term memories into long-term memories.
Does the amount of sleep affect your dreams? If you get lots of sleep your more likely to fall into the REM stage where most dreams happen. If you don’t get a lot of sleep you're most likely not going to fall into the REM stage but the Non-rem stage. Studies show that babies and kids have to get lots of sleep because the body is still not fully developed. Babies spend 50% of their sleep in the REM stage while 20% for adults. That is why Adults tend to have fewer dreams than kids. When you have intense dreams such as nightmares your brain is more active hence you waking up after a nightmare. Why do you forget your dreams? You possibly forget your dreams because they were not that interesting or very important to you. Studies have shown that when humans are really good at filtering information that is not important. Those who recall most of their dreams usually wake up throughout the night. Researches believe that most of their time awake during the night the dream(s) turn into a long-term memory. Allowing them to remember it the next day. Say the more time awake the more time to turn that dream into long memory.
Can a pillow be the problem? The sleep position you are in might affect if you get a good night sleep or not. Let’s say you sleep on your stomach, sleeping on your stomach can reduce snore and sleep apnea, but it can take a strike on your back and neck. Poor sleep can lead you in discomfort and it might even affect how your sleeping and if you are forgetting your dreams. Did you know sleeping without pillows will help your back extend? If you rest without pillows you will rest in a natural position without any consequences or aches. Using a pillow that is too soft can decrease the blood flow to your head. Did you know that sleeping on the floor is better? Majority of people sleep on a mattress but did you know that sleeping on the floor is way better because our spine gets a chance to reline to its natural posture. While a mattresses hug up our body which doesn’t leave any space for the spine to regain its posture.
What is sleep paralysis? Sleep paralysis is basically when you dream you wake up and you see a dark figure coming towards you and you can't move your body or say anything for a short period of time. Sleep paralysis cant harm you although many people have it. Sleep paralysis can happen when your eyes are closed or open. Although Paralysis is totally normal so don't be worried.
Why do we dream what we dream? We dream what we dream because this is when the brain processes what your thinking, your emotions, and memories. Say you had a dream about visiting someone who passed away, that is one of your memories.
Why do we dream about falling? The most common dream you might've had is a falling dream. If you've had a falling dream you might've suffered from anxiety, insecurities, and instabilities. It also reflects that you feeling that you're failing something in some situation. Can dreams kill you? Bad dreams can kill you by a heart attack, but it does depend on the dream itself but still your in Rem sleep so its unlikely it will happen.
How long can a dream last? The first dream might last about 5 minutes, later on, it might be 45 minutes to an hour. People have at least 100,000 dreams in a lifetime. An average dreams last about 20-30 minutes. How much sleep are we supposed to get? Newborns are supposed to get at least 9 hours of sleep. Infants need 12-15 hours of sleep a night. Toddlers need about 11-14 hours a night. Preschoolers need 10-13 hours a night. Children need about 9-11 hours a night. Teenagers need about 8-10 hours a night, Finally, Young adults/ Adults need about 7-10 hours a night.
How many dreams to we have a night? Experts say that we dream about 4-6 maybe 7 dreams a night. During REM sleep it shows that our brain is heightened. Dreams without a doubt are very unique and interesting. This research had shown me how dreams can go deeper than I originally thought. Dreams are a series of thoughts an images put into a memory/dream and the more it is attention-grabbing the more you will remember it the next day. I have learned a variety of many things during my research. My hypothesis is that I think older females have a better recalling than older men do, but young males have a better recalling than young females.
