The Role of Rice in South Indian Cuisine

South India is the area encompassing the India states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana as well as the union territories of Andaman and Nicobar islands, Lakshadweep island. Rice is the diet staple, while fish is an integral component of coastal south India meals. Coconut and spices are used extensively in south Indian cuisine. The region has a rich cuisine involving both traditional non-vegetarian and vegetarian dishes comparing rice, legumes, lentils. Its distinct aroma and flavour is achieved by the blending of flavourings and spices, including curry leaves, mustard seeds, coriander, ginger, garlic, chilli, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, green cardamom, cumin, nutmeg, coconut and rosewater. 

The traditional way of eating meal involves being seated on the floor, having the food served on a banana leaf and using clean fingers of the right hand to take the food into the mouth. After the meal, the fingers are washed the easily degradable banana leaf is discarded or becomes fodder for cattle. Eating on banana leaves is a custom thousands of years old, imparts a unique flavour to the food, and is considered healthy. Idli, dosa, uthappam, pesarattu, appam, pongal and paniyaram are popular breakfast in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Rice is served with sambar, rasam and poriyal for lunch. Andhra cuisine is characterised by pickles and spicy curries. Famous dishes are pesarattu, ulava charu, bobbatul, putharekulu and gongura. Chettinad cuisine is famous for its non-vegetarian items, and Hyderabadi cuisine is popular for its biryani. Udupi cuisine, which originates from udupi located in the coastal Kanara region of Karnataka is fomous for its vegetarian dishes.

Production of Rice in Southern Part of India

Has everybody was known that rice has been the staple food across Asia to a larger extend significantly. Rice is an Asian food with which we have for over 1000 of years in fact it is said to be that rice was first traditionally cultivated in China which date back 6000 years ago. But research discovery has found that rice seeds and its tools for cultivation are dated back for 9000 years ago. Late the production of rice come all over the world India, Europe, Egypt, America and Australia it is right said rice took major role fastly in Asia and then immense popularity and then it know widely consume by people across the globe. 

Production of Rice in Andhra Pradesh

It is highly known as the one of the most successful state for production of rice. It come on number one in south India for the rice production. The production of rice are very cheaply among them. Mostly famer used to produce rice only over there. 21.6 lakh hectares of area is cover under rice crops. 128.95 lakh tones of rice production come every year from Andhra Pradesh. Sannalu, swarna, pushkala are the region in Andhra Pradesh which produce most of the rice.

Production of Rice in Tamil Nadu

It is also actively involves in the highest yield of rice with great profitable income for the poor farmer the climate and land is favourable to grow rice. Tamil Nadu come on number two in production of rice in south India. It occupy 19 lakh hectares of land and produce 74.58 lakh tones of rice every year.

Production of Rice in Karnataka

Karnataka is gotten a major potential in generating rice crops the state largely depend on the cultivation of rice crops and consider it as a staple food of the state with and remarkable climate condition . 14 lakh hectares of land are covered for rice yield and 39.55 lakh tones of production of rice we get from there. Some of the major region actively play in production of rice are Mysore, Bellary, Mangalore, Udupi.

In Karnataka there are 4 types of region which produce different types of rice: 

  1. Short duration varieties
  2. Medium duration varieties
  3. Long duration varieties
  4. Drought resistant varieties

Rice it is still an important part of nowadays Indian cuisine - the wase as it was decages ago. Moreover, rice is the diet staple in differenet contries throughout the world. The various states of India are actively cultivating rice plantation with modern technology and latest innovation in India. It is basically grow in tropical plant and kharif crops. It required regular water supply and high temperature for the proper growing of rice crops.
