The Role Of Transformation In Literary Stories
When would transformation scare us the most? In these stories “Where Is Here”(By Joyce Carol Oates) and”The Raven”(By Edgar Allan Poe) both stories change in drastic ways due to transformation. What is the purpose/role of transformation? Transformation plays a role in stories by depthening fear. In the stories “Raven”(By Joyce Carol Oates) and “Where Is Here”(By Edgar Allan Poe) transformation strengthens fear throughout the story in many different ways.
What is transformation and how does it affect stories? Transformation is capable of depthening the feeling,mood and setting in a story. Transformation can change the feeling of characters and objects. It can make a character feel remorse and could make the texture of an object change for sharp object like a knife could possibly become dull. The mood during a story can change by making characters go from a simple/sane state of mind to an insane and delusional new character. The setting could change from being to a light,peaceful, and safe setting and could transform into a dark,gloomy, scary setting due to an incident or a occurring event.
In the “Raven”(By Edgar Allan Poe) shows transformation. It shows alteration by his emotions early on by slumped in his chair and refuses to answer the door to anyone who knocks. He becomes more depressed throughout the days longing for his dead wife. Since he was unable to sleep due to knocking on his door he decided to check what was the cause of it. After realizing who was knocking he decided to let it be, until the raven kept going and spoke to him and made him believe it was his wife who had passed. Since the Raven spoke to him his subconscious created a reasons for why it was happening. The raven continued to say “Never More” he began to lose sanity and mourned more for his wife who was gone, because of his mourning he believed he was going to meet his wife in heaven due to the raven being a “Sign”. At the end of the story as the Raven was perched on the chamber door he was trying to grasp reality and hoped for Elenore to come back or for him to move on.
In “Where Is Here”(By Joyce Carol Oates) transformation focuses more on the mod and setting of the story to show any supernatural or uncommon events occuring. The story starts off peaceful and calm until a family hears a knock on their door. The father opens it to see a unknown man talk about his past and of the house. As the man walks through the house uninvited talking about his past, meanwhile the family in discomfort and concern are scared because a man they've never seen before enters their house with no meaning and not only talks about himself but about the family. As his tour comes to an end the father kicks him out of the house. After the man as removed it gets dark, lights suddenly become dimmed, walls start losing color and texture, and the moods of the characters also change as they no longer feel discomfort but confused and concerned about what that means purpose of coming over was for.

It can change the way on how you view things from peaceful and pleasant to terrible.
