To What Extent Individuals Overcome Adversity
“Success often lies not in what happens but in what you prevent from happening” Black Klansman, a film directed by Spike Lee explores how Individuals may face many challenges but to overcome these challenges, one must work hard, have patience and determination. Similarly, my entity was based around hard work and courage for educational purposes from the inability of my parents to seek higher education.
Throughout my childhood I experienced adversity throughout my elementary years, I skipped class pretending to be sick, never handed in projects on time and most of all I struggled in English. As a child, my parents would be concerned about my educational development. They didn't know if I would be able to get caught up with the other kids in my class or fall behind, I struggled academically throughout my elementary years, not knowing English very well, as this put me at a disadvantage enabling me to understand the other academic subject, such as science, social and math. Growing up, I was a shy and quiet kid who would never participate in group discussions and activities, my lack of courage didn't help me get friends, the only positive aspect of my life was my family.
While the Vietnam war was occurring, my parents immigrated to Canada, my dad traveled overseas and my mother emerging from a plane. My parents work very hard to provide for me and my sister, they work long hours at their job and will sacrifice their meals to feed us if we were still hungry. My mother couldn't help me with homework; however she worked overtime along with going to English school to learn how to speak English but later quit because it was too much for her, although growing up with a mother that struggles so much to take care of me and my sister, as the youngest, I was always being compared to my older sister, Michelle, she had exceptional grades as well as great English skills. My parents wanted me to be just like her but as the school years went by, I started to work harder and with patience and determination, I was able to move towards the level of getting below fifty percent to seventy percent or higher average, with my mom support to find a fantastic remarkable tutor, no matter the cost.
When my dad immigrated from Vietnam it was required to learn the language, English as it would help him adjust to the Canadian culture so then he would be able to get a job and communicate with others. My dad would be to busy making money to the extent of coming home later at night or early in the morning. My dad who arrived in Canada had to adapt and learn the Canadian culture and language to survive, with his hard work, patience, and determination he is successful in translating any sort of communication that requires the English language.
I would complain a lot, mostly about school and being alone. I would have meltdowns once a month but my parents didn't know what to do in ordered to help me. Adversity has been part of my whole identity; however, I got to discover myself in the process, I eventually had the desire to overcome anything for me to be successful one day and with the help of family it can help move me forward as it will make it easier to accept myself to overcome challenges and difficulties in life.
As I grow up, adversity will always be part of life and how individuals grow and learn, with the determination, patience, and hard work you can achieve success. We all have to overcome challenges to survive in a new country and to fit in. Similarly, Lee’s Blackkklasman examines how Ron had to face obstacles, political and racism to get things accomplished and overcome barriers. There is no better than adversity then its lesson on how to improve your performance the next time. There is no education like adversity, it is handed to everyone in life and no one's journey is easy but its the way you handle it and discover life challenges along the way to help you discover who you are.
