Major Depression Disorder is a mood disorder which is described by persistent sadness and lack of interest in most matters. It affects the way one behaves, feels and thinks. It also causes various emotional and physical issues. Talk therapy and medications can be used to cure and treat major depression. (Culpepper et al., 2015)

A middle aged man with major depressive disorder cannot focus on his day to day activities. There will be changes in his appetite and he will have sleep problems. If the person went through a divorce, then he might feel sadness, irritability, loneliness and have negative thoughts. Suicidal thoughts and feelings are especially common in such cases. Also there is a possibility of indulging in substance abuse and alcohol misuse. If this depression is not treated then it will result in emotional, health and behavioral problems which distresses every aspect of one’s life.

From a psychological perspective there are various ways to prevent and treat major depressive disorder. Different types of anti-depressants are available which can be given to the patient. Talk therapy or psychotherapy can be used where the person with depression discusses his conditions and issues with mental health professional. If the depression is severe then partial hospitalization or treatment can be done. (Soleimani et al., 2011)

In Islam there is a solution to every problem and even with depression there are solutions which can be found in the teachings. The best remedy is to fear Allah and be patient, discard all the negative thoughts and trust Allah. One should keep themselves busy with beneficial activities like reading and reciting Quran or join any charitable cause. When a person helps others it also has a positive effect on their mood. Reciting Quran helps in overcoming anxiety and sadness.
