Analysis of Visual, Auditory and Tactile Learning Styles
My VKA Learning Style
There are three main styles of learning which is visual, auditory, and tactile(kinesthetic). Visual learners prefer to use graphs, charts and they prefer to write down very detail notes about lectures. Auditory learners like to listen to lectures and class discussions. Most individuals prefer long lectures that may include recordings. Tactile (kinesthetic) learners learn by doing. They are more hands-on learners and they usually learn by making mistakes first. I am a Visual Learner. I first found out what kind of learner I was when I was an undergraduate in the UWM dance department. The way I absorb, analyze, and retain information helps me retain the information that is given to me more easily. As a visual learner. I learn by seeing diagrams, writing things down and organizing my notes by color or matter of importance. I learn best through interaction and visual displays. I can remember things very easily and sometimes when something is well thought out, I can capture the image in my head.
I learn best by:
- Looking at the person who is speaking to class.
- I prefer working in a quiet place or sometimes I can listen to soft music in the background
- I retain most of my information by working alone and I can better explain myself once I have all the information I need to know.
- When studying, I take many notes and write down lots of details that include color coordination.
- I use color to highlight main ideas.
- Before starting my assignment, I set a goal and write it down by using sticky notes. Sticky notes help me stay on task. I prefer checking things off my list as I go.
- Before reading a new chapter or a book, I preview it first by scanning the pictures, headings and I read all side notes before reading the chapter. Sometimes I preview all summaries at the end of each chapter before reading. This helps give me a clear idea into what I will learn.
Kinesthetic/Tactile Learner
My second learning style was a tactile learner. I learn by doing and not watching. I learn by experimenting things I am unfamiliar with. I prefer hands on work that involve movement and exchanging of ideas. In a class room setting, I have to have something in my hand while listening to a professor speak. If everything is auditory, I tend to not listen, and I eventually zone out. I do not prefer lengthy class rooms unless the class room involves me being hands one. As a tactile learner, I prefer interaction where it’s in a classroom setting or workplace. As a trainer in my current position, I usually show my employees what to do before I watch them do it. I have to feel it.
Conclusion
I have discovered my particular learning style which is VKA. I learn more by seeing and touching it versus listening. I realize that I need to take it upon myself to learn the styles of other individuals as well. By doing this will help me more effectively interact, while also increasing my learning potential because I can learn from other individuals. Knowledge is power, and the more I try to acquire, and the more I can learn from myself and other individuals, the better I can understand different learning methods.
