What It Means To Be A Hero

What is a Hero? Debi Mazar once said “A hero is somebody who is selfless, who is generous in spirit, who just tries to give back as much as possible and help people. A hero to me is someone who saves people and who really cares. ” A hero can be anyone who you look up to or admire. Everyone has their own personal hero. A hero can be someone who has helped you overcome something like a fear or someone who physically saved you from something like a burning building. There are many different traits a person can have to be considered a hero. To be a hero you need to have selflessness, courage, and patience because having these traits will make you the best hero possible. To be selfless means to be more concerned with the needs and wishes of others than one’s own. To be a true hero, one must be able to look at issues that relate to a whole group rather than a single person. Heroes are able to forget about the struggles they are facing to be able to help others. They make sure to put others first.

Mother Teresa is an example of a selfless person. At the age of 36, Mother Teresa decided to set aside the struggles of her life to help the poor of India. She had very little help from others while doing this and even struggled to feed herself at times. Mother Teresa also formed a charity group that focused on taking care of the hungry, the poor, the homeless, etc. She is a true advocate for this trait. For one to be selfless another trait that comes to mind is courage. Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Courage is important because it represents the mental strength needed to overcome obstacles that may scare someone or seem impossible. A hero is able to get over that mind block to successfully complete a task. This trait is important because not just anyone can have courage. It takes real mental strength to gain this trait.

War veterans show great courage. My grandfather was a war nurse. This shows great courage because he left his home to sacrifice his life to help others in war. He helped people that were injured. He also suffered from the affects of agent orange. Courage is a big part of being a hero. For all of these traits to come into one, a hero needs patience. Patience is the ability to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset. Heroes go through a lot to accomplish what they need to. Some things may be frustrating and need more time to be done, therefore patience is needed to help a hero get through it.

Coco Chanel had to have patience to get to where she is now. She came from a single mother who worked at a hospital as a laundry women and a father who worked as a work clothes peddler. She learned to sew at a very young age and began to work as a seamstress. After a while she began making accessories and clothing that became popular. She couldn’t have done this without having the patience to get through all of the hardships to get to a successful point.

Being selfless, courageous, and patient are key traits to being a true hero. A hero should be selfless because they will think about others before they think about themself. Having courage is important because you need to be brave enough to overcome risky situations that may put you in danger to help another person. Finally, you will need patience to become a hero because it takes time to reach your goals. Everyone has their own hero. A hero is someone who has done something that has helped you in some way. You can choose who your hero is.
