Why Dose The Number Of Sexual Assaults Continue Throughout The Army
Sexual assault and harassment is a big problem in the army and the military. It is a problem that we must fix. Sexual assualt and harassment causes a greater danger than just a crime or wrong doing against an individual. It has a lasting affect on an individual it promotes an enviorment free of dicipline and respect, and undermindes mission readiness. When a problem like this persists it has a drematically negitive effect on the mission readiness of the team, and makes us a less efficent and effective fighting force. This problem must be fought against as much as possible until we can see a military free of sexual assualt and harasment. Sexual assualt has long been a formost issue in the Army for a long time and continues to be one to this day. The DOD reported for the fiscal year of 2017 6,769 SARP reports of sexual assault cases. A 9. 7 percent increase from the 2016 fiscal year. Despite the increase in reports SARP also reports that despite the increase they have seen a reduvtion by half of female reports and 2/3 by males. Thats a step in the right direction but still a number far to high to be satisfactory. So we still have a problem that needs to be addressed.
So how do we fix this problem. We can address the problem in a few ways that we will look into. Education, Preemptive action, and programs availible to help victims, those are the salutions. Sexual assualt and harassment accurs for a few reasons. One of those reasons is that people abuse power. This is not an uncommon way assualt and harassment occurs in the the army or in the civilian world. Someone of greater rank my use subbordinates as a subject on which to harass or assualt because of possible retribution on the victim if he or she was to report their superior. Another reason this occurs is the general aggressive nature of the the army and military as a whole. Generally the armed forcesn do not attract the weak or frail of society. These types of individuals if pushed to far or stressed to much can sometimes lose their way and utilize there personality in an unhealthy and harmful way that can sometimes end up in sexual assualt. The current approach to this problem statistally actually has produced a drop in the number of assualts reported to the DoD. The problem is being dealt with but can be tweaked and refined to drive the number as low as possible. The Army's approach is proving to be effective in driving down the number of assualts but could change and be updating to continue the great progress it has made.
First it can be updated and focused more on its speciffic audience. The Army could look into developing different programs for men and women and different age groups. We also need to protect the victims in a more efficent manner and refuse to let them face retribution in the case that assualt or harassment dose in fact occur. Also we need to be preemptive in stopping assualt by creating a safer work enviornment and segrigation of men and women when neccisary. This are just a few of the many ways this problem can be delt with. But the problem of sexual assualt will never be completely eliminated but we must continue to do everything we can to make it uncommon as possible. As long as humans are a part of the Army there will be cases of sexual assualt but if education, acton and help are continually tweaked and improved we will continue to see the number of assualts drop and thats what we all should be striving for.
