A Career In Law – My Choice To Fight For The Rights Of Others
The English philosopher Thomas Hobbes said “The law is the public conscience”. This signifies that Law is our moral compass, and aims for the greater good. Being of Bangladeshi origin my desire to pursue a career in Law has significantly increased. This is as my frequent visits to Bangladesh as a child, and current understanding of Bangladesh’s politics has made me aware of the corruption in the judiciary and legal system. I believe that Law is essential for a strong and fair society, and Bangladesh’s poor legal system is reflected upon the country’s lack of development. This had made me realise how important Law is for a society to uphold peace and protect liberties and rights. As a British citizen, the recent vote for the UK to leave the European Union (EU) has increased my curiosity towards EU Law. Law is fundamental for the ongoing Brexit process, not only due to the democracy involved, but also due to the potential significant changes for the British legal system.
This is because many laws in the UK derive from the EU, and are currently governed by EU institutions. For example, free movement of labour. Regarding international laws, Donald Trump’s election in 2017 has caused controversy. This is due to the Executive Order 13769, also known as ‘the travel ban’. It lists 7, mainly Muslim countries of which people aren’t allowed to travel to America from. As a Muslim, this law sparked interest in me as I was curious at how quickly laws could be implemented, considering there were legal challenges. The subjects which I have studied at A level have been beneficial towards my knowledge as a future law student. Studying English Literature has made me more analytical as I am able to read into texts with different perspectives. This is useful because when dealing with complex cases, there may be more than one conclusion to resolving a situation. Ethics is useful towards Law, as laws represents the social standards of humans. Both law and ethics provide guidelines of what people may or may not do in certain situations.
Furthermore, Philosophy has helped me to develop the ability to argue my perspectives on life, draw logical conclusions, and critically evaluate theodicies proposed by philosophers. Through studying Geography, I have learnt about international laws, dictatorships and human rights in countries such as China and North Korea. This has made me more aware of the impacts that laws have on a countries political, economic, and social development. I was also a sports leader for one year, which has contributed in my leadership, communicative, and listening skills. Work experience at Addison & Khan Solicitors helped me develop a greater awareness of what a law-based job may be like. During my work experience at the firm I was able to discover what cases and transactions actually involve. I was shown through different cases, and read legal opinion letters, court letters and interviews.
This gave me a broader understanding of how solicitors deal with legal battles. I observed how paralegals and solicitors worked, which gave me a wider perception on their structure of work, as I could also see their client meetings. Getting the chance to work with others from different specialities and viewing the practical legal skills helped me obtain appreciation and solidify my decision in choosing law for university and as a future career. I have worked in multiple GP surgeries, and my current role as admin staff and receptionist at The Loxford Practice requires confidentiality in compliance with the NHS Act 2006, and the General Data Protection Regulation 2018. The NHS Act allows personal data to be shared between those offering care to the patients; with their consent, but also protects their confidentiality when data about them may be used for other purposes. This therefore portrayed that I am attentive, and trustworthy. Both of which are qualities needed in lawyers as they also deal with personal client information. I stay updated with Change. org which is an online platform for social change. It allows me to sign petitions for projects that I strongly support. I believe by having a broader understanding of Law, I can apply my skills learnt to make a greater change in society. This is because a career in Law allows you to fight for the rights of others and strives towards justice, it is therefore highly rewarding, hence my passion to pursue it
