What is the job description?

Cellular researchers study cells that are within living organisms. To be specific the research would contain information about the cells, and how they interact and work throughout the body.

What are soft-skills needed to be successful?

Soft-skills that would be beneficial to succeed in the cellular research field would be the ability to give speeches and write fluid journals that can be understood and comprehended by anyone that would possibly listen or pick up the journal. In addition having the basic background knowledge on how to act/comprehend/follow all rules in a lab will be crucial.

What is the work environment like for this position?

The environment may vary depending on what your task is for the day. For example one day you might be in the lab testing cells, the next you could be analyzing the data you collected through a computer screen at home, the other portion your time could be spent writing/giving speeches to further others comprehension on the research you might have gathered through a lab/experiment.

What are the educational requirements?

To become a cellular researcher you must obtain your doctorate. As a prerequisite to gathering your masters you must obtain a bachelor of science in biology, microbiology cell and molecular biology, or ecology. Which is a four year program. Next is your masters degree, which is a two year program. Courses that are commonly taken through obtaining your masters are genetics, cellular neurobiology, advanced genetics and development, and biochemistry. Last but not least you will need to have your doctorate of philosophy in molecular and cell biology. This may take several years past obtaining your master's due to the immense amount of projects and laboratory rotations that are required. Also the completion of a scholarly dissertation is a must. As far as continuing education is concerned none is required.

Careers that will work with Cellular Researchers include Cellular scientist, and Lab technicians.

What are areas of greatest need?

An area that will always be in need is stem cell research because hundreds of thousands of people could benefit from productive research. For example any research could benefit those who have spinal cord injuries, parkinson’s disease, alzheimer's, type 1 diabetes, ect.

My opinion

I would not care to be a Cellular Researcher due to the fact that there isn’t much interpersonal connection with other humans. Although the job does have its benefits of helping further education on stem cell therapy, there isn’t as much physical communication with patients as I would care to have. I would not want to have this occupation because of the lack of personal connections as previously stated in addition to the fact that you are not able to make treatment plans and follow a patient through their entire treatment.
