Drugs will interfere with the way neurons send, receive, and process signals. Drugs such as marijuana and heroin can cause hallucinations and a “feeling of being high” because the drugs “activate onto and activate the neurons”. This gives a false sense of the neurotransmitter being activated. Other drugs like amphetamine or cocaine “release large amounts of natural neurotransmitters” further disrupting the communication of the neurons. The drugs affect the “prefrontal cortex that powers the ability to think, plan, solve problems, make decisions, and exert self-control over impulses.” Drugs affect the basal ganglia which takes the important role for “positive forms of motivation like the effects of healthy activities eating and socializing.” Drugs can also affect the extended amygdala which “plays the role in stressful feelings like anxiety, irritability, and unease.” These drugs prevent extended amygdala from playing its role and impairs the prefrontal cortex, but boosts the basal ganglia.
I think drugs are bad for you and should only be used for medical purposes. People use drugs too much as pain killers and put themselves at risk. I think doctors should give less prescription drugs and people should be required to understand the effects of the drugs and sign off saying they understand because more and more people are dying from opiods.
