Cultural Effect Of TV And Reality Shows From The West On India’s Television Industry
After gaining knowledge of approximately cultural homogenization and globalization in elegance, I all at once began to survey upon how tons of a cultural effect there has been via TV and reality shows from the west on India’s Television industry in the current years. Apart from overtly influencing Indian’s preference of garments, motors, track and dance TV shows additionally affects our manner of thinking in a more latent manner. In India shows are larger than existence, and possibly have the greatest mass enchantment and “active target market”. During my research about degradation of Indian culture, I found a famous reality TV show named Splitsvilla. The concept of this show completely opposes the culture of Indian society and is based on western theme which is introduced to the Indian audience. This reality show revolves around young boys and girls trying to secure a place in "Splitsvilla", a villa. It is a "hunt for love" show where boys and girls compete in tasks to remain in the competition and mingle with the contestants to find love. In the end, one boy and one girl are crowned the winners of Splitsvilla, as a couple.
On the other hand Indian culture does not allow youngsters to live in a same house with strangers in order to find love. Furthermore Indians believe in the concept of arrange marriage which means families find a life partner for their young ones. But the acceptance of this reality show by the audience and its huge popularity shows that how western culture has been blended into Indian culture and how people have adopted this that no one can say that love marriage was not an original concept of Indian society. Manfred Steger has defined “Cultural Homogenization as the intensification and expansion of cultural flows across the globe. ” It means that different cultures blends into each other so well with respect of time that it is very difficult to differentiate between them.
This show is also an example of cultural hybridization means blending of elements of local cultures and global culture to form a new culture. This show is perfect example of cultural hybridization because of the fact that most of the concept of this reality show is adopted from western culture but its ethics are Indians. For an instance, this show is based on dating and hunting for love and living in a same house without marriage which is an element of western culture but the fact is that in the whole process of finding love and winning the contestants are not allowed to have any physical relation because it is strongly prohibited in Indian culture to have any physical interaction with your lover without a legal marriage but this practice is completely normal in western culture. Which shows how two cultures come together to form a new concept of a reality show in which individuals are allowed to live with each other so that they can compete and get to know each other but with some restrictions in order to follow local Indian traditions.
This reality TV show perfectly shows the difference and acceptance of different culture in one, how cultures perfectly blends into each other and how different elements of culture can form a new culture and concept for the society which is also accepted by the local citizens. But according to me cultural hybridization is the globalization type that perfectly fits with this show because, these newly introduces concepts are not only accepted by the public but are commonly in practice by locals with some exceptions like nowadays, youngsters prefer to find their partners for themselves and introduce them to their parents which is also called love-arrange marriage.
