Research On Personalities In The Workplace
Introduction
The purpose of this assignment is to educate ourselves and others on our personalities and the way that our personalities currently, or will in the future, affect our interactions with individuals in the workplace or everyday life. This will be further evaluated by looking at our personality codes and what they mean. Also, explaining what we have learned from looking at our personalities and insights we have discovered. As well as, looking more in-depth on how our personalities may clash or complement each other in the workplace. Different values that we possess or do not possess will also be discussed.
Personality
The personality codes that our group has includes INFJ, INFP and ESTJ. The code INFJ belongs to Lydia; the code INFP belongs to Ariel and the code ESTJ belongs to Tatiyana. The first letter in the code is where one focuses their attention the most. This includes extraversion and introversion. Extraverts are typically more sociable whereas introverts tend to keep to themselves more.
The second letter is the way one takes in information. This includes sensing and intuition. Those that have more intuition tend to analyze more whereas those that are more sensing tend to base everything off of past experiences. The third letter is how one makes decisions. This includes thinking and feeling. Those that are thinking tend to be more logical decision makers whereas feeling tend to make decisions with more emotion involved.
The last letter relates to how one deals with the world around them. This includes judging and perceiving. Those that are more judging tend to like structure whereas perceivers are more open.
INFJ (Lydia)
INFJs have a way with people and have a strong connection with others. They have a deep love for others in the sense that they care about others and are hopeful for their future. However, INFJs do not necessarily share their insights about someone directly to that person. They like those that help others and those that like the complexity of INFJs. If they are not surrounded by these kinds of people they can feel alone. “INFJs broad inner focus usually gives them an ease with theoretical and conceptual subjects”. Something that I learned is that I am a quiet person who is complex on the inside and cares for others, according to my personality type. I am surprised that the career suggestions are for teaching in the arts and counselling since these are jobs that do not interest me at all as I would find them stressful and depressing. I am not surprised that INFJs can understand people well since I find myself constantly being the ‘counselor’ of people I know. I am also not surprised that they typically keep their thoughts to themselves since I do not normally express my full opinion to people. An insight on my personality is that possible jobs that would benefit my personality are those that allow me to have in depth conversations with others.
INFP (Ariel)
INFP’s strongly value their friendships and relationships with others. They are creative, but don’t like to share their ideas and personality with people before building a trusting relationship. INFP’s generally find themselves getting bored easily while doing standard jobs. “They will likely be bored quickly by routine jobs that don't relate to their inner values of harmony and friendship. ” INFP’s will not feel invested into any work they do unless they are truly passionate in the work they are doing. They work best when they have the creative freedom to help add to or start a new project. I’ve learned that certain traits I’ve discovered about myself in the past are actually part of my personality rather than just individual characteristics. I was surprised at how accurate these tests can be at describing people’s personality traits as mine described me nearly perfectly. I wasn’t surprised by my career options of teaching and working in the fine arts because I want to be a dance teacher. I also wasn’t surprised with becoming “bored quickly by routine jobs” because I find it hard to focus for long periods of time on tasks I am not passionate about. Some insights I’ve discovered are that I am passionate about relationships and I want my relationships to reflect on the values I have and the work I produce.
ESTJ (Tatiyana)
ESTJs are practical. They do not tend to worry about events from the past or future; they tend to worry about the present. They are also often objective-organizers and make for great managers. Something almost all ESTJ’s have in common is the desire for perfection. When they put their mind to it, they can do just about anything based on the fact that they limit their distractions. Communication and leadership roles are nothing ESTJ’s lack, this is why they best fit the roles of managers, police officers and even involvement in the army. A job that best suits ESTJs is one that requires someone to be in command at all times and one that impacts many such as a doctor. “ESTJ’S are also very logical and apply their logic to everything people and things”. Working with Lydia in the Workplace Something that would be good about working with me is that I am understanding of the people around me. This is good when working with others to help avoid unnecessary conflicts. I am also a good communicator and have pride in what I do. A negative thing about working with me is that I do not always express my opinions.
Working with Ariel in the Workplace
I tend to become passionate in my work and become inspired for periods of time. I am adaptable to different surroundings and can respond to wants and needs of employers and consumers with creative suggestions. I also tend to work to improve people’s lives rather than doing a meaningless task. I can become bored easily while participating in standard or simple jobs. I can only become motivated for a short period of time and I would rather work by myself than with others in a work environment.
Working with Tatiyana in the Workplace
I am, based on my personality, very efficient on how and when I want things done. I also become very passionate on a job that relates to my interests or personal life. I often ask if the idea at hand is logical and could be supported by facts. If there is a problem I am the type to resolve the problem immediately. I am not one to take criticism to heart, instead I take what I am being told and find alternative ways to make what I have made better. A weakness I often display while working in a workplace is the desire to always be right about situations and liking the upper hand.
Working Together in the Workplace
Something positive that comes out of all of us working together is that even though two of us are quiet and more soft spoken (Lydia and Ariel) one of us (Tatiyana), is able to take charge when necessary. Also, we are all able to communicate with each other. A negative thing about working with each other is that one is impatient (Tatiyana), one is patient (Ariel) and one is understanding of those that are impatient or patient (Lydia). This would mean that there would be no progress if there is a conflict. Another negative thing is that two of us (Lydia and Ariel) have more passion and strong emotions towards our work where the other (Tatiyana) likes to keep her emotions out of the workplace and has trouble understanding other’s feelings.
Values
We all hold different terminal and instrumental values based on our personalities. INFJs (Lydia) have terminal values of a sense of accomplishment and equality. The instrumental values include ambitious and broad minded. INFPs (Ariel) have terminal values of inner harmony and happiness. The instrumental values are imaginative and honest. ESTJs (Tatiyana) have terminal values of a comfortable life and an exciting life. The instrumental values are capable and courageous. From this it is obvious that all of our values are different which can cause a value clash. In order for us to overcome this value clash we have to learn to look beyond our personalities and try to understand and respect each other’s values in order to get along.
Conclusion
From doing this assignment we have learned that our personalities clash more than they complement each other. Even though there are positives about us working together in the workplace there are more negatives and complications that can occur. This is from an uneven balance of opposite personality traits. We learned that we are capable of working with each other, but we find that people with similar personality traits and values work better together.
