The Reasons I Choose Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics And French As My Science Subjects

I attend Leasowes High School. I am presently studying an assortment of GCSE's including Maths, English Language and Literature, triple Science, French, Geography and Fine Art. I would like to study Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and French in Sixth Form because I would like to be a doctor as it would be a privilege to help and fix people when they need it most.

I believe that my science subjects that I propose on studying all complement Mathematics as they are about discovering styles for describing reality, be it through language in French or through equations and models in Biology and Chemistry. Chemistry has allowed me to relate Mathematics to several theories, such as titrations. My statistical skills have been further boosted whilst studying Biology by equations such as biological unit conversions. Additionally, I find critical thinking especially relevant as it is about the construction of sound logical arguments, an art lying at the heart of Mathematics in proof.

Mathematics for me is a subject where I have been able to enhance my knowledge with problem solving and analytical thinking. In SATs maths I achieved Level 6. I have attained 2 Bronze Junior UKMT Awards, 1 Silver Intermediate UKMT Award and the Regional Finals UKMT Award. The Awards from the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust display my pure interest and application of mathematics. Within school, I have had positions of responsibility including Arts Ambassador, Digital Leader, Mathematics Ambassador, French Ambassador and School Councillor. Other extracurricular activities I partook in were Chinese Language Club, Space Club, Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Young Enterprise Company Programme. During my dedicated 8 years as School Councillor all throughout primary and secondary school; I developed key leadership and management skills where I represented my year group and their valuable voices. These involvements invariably experienced me to strike a reasonable balance between academics and extracurricular activities. Alongside my academic interests, the practical subject of art is what I quite fondly enjoy as a hobby.

Art is like a species that evolves with time reflecting our world through someone's eye and the craft of one’s hand. It symbolises the truth and is like a photograph of a million words. My creative aptitude continues to grow as I have been actively involved with the renowned Butlers’ Fine Art Masterclass and the Butlers Institute of Fine Arts. I have painted large scale backdrops for the school’s theatrical productions. I have had walls of my artwork exhibited and commemorated around school. Outside of school, I partake in swimming at thimblemill baths and rock climbing at rock up. These activities motivate me both physically and mentally for success. I enjoy going to vibrant concerts such as wireless and o2 arenas. I appreciate reading influential historically inspired novels that establish an insight of how society has reformed by contrasting the modern-day society and the era depicted in these literature.

Books such as ‘1984’ by George Orwell are quite delightful works of writing. Also, being multilingual provides me with many cognitive benefits and allows me to interact with other cultures and people. During summer, I completed a work experience placement as a Pharmaceutical Assistant at Hills Pharmacy that predominantly involved interpreting prescriptions, disposing drugs and date-checking medication. Working within a pharmacy was insightful as it gave a behind the scenes journey of a field encompassed around the sciences. It has reinforced my desire to pursue a pathway in medicine. Also, I completed a placement as a Customer Team Member at Co-Operative where I greeted customers, answering questions regarding food products, stock, and company policies where I continued to develop my key communication and adaptability skills.

My placements were useful in giving me an insight to a professional atmosphere which will prove valuable in the foreseeable future. My ideas for my future career are concentrated on the Sciences. I am currently considering the avenue of medicine. I feel this career would suit me and would operate my skills and strengths to the full potential. My subsequent career goal is the profession of a hospital doctor.
