Overcoming Depression and Anxiety: Coping Strategies

Depression… The extreme feeling of sadness, unexcitment or even thinking about death. What about anxiety? Anxiety is another form of disorder where you will feel restlessness, having panic attacks and overthinking about a very small thing. Because of the lockdown, depression and anxiety has been more common lately. The gov’t requires people to not go outside. But if someone will ask you, do you feel safe at your own home? Do you still feel this thing called “home” or you find it more relevant to go outside? How can you differentiate depression form anxiety? What is Depression?

Depression is more than just feeling sad or having a bad day. When sadness lasts for a long time and interferes with normal daily activities, you could be depressed. Symptoms of depression include the following:

  • Feeling sad or anxious often or all the time.
  • Not wanting to do activities that were fun before.
  • Feeling irritable, easily frustrated, or restless.
  • Having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.
  • Getting up too early or sleeping too much.
  • Eating more or less than usual or not having an appetite.
  • Have stomach aches, pains, headaches, or problems that do not get better with treatment.
  • Having trouble concentrating, remembering details, or making decisions.
  • Feeling tired, even after a good night's sleep.
  • Feeling guilty, worthless or helpless.
  • Thinking about suicide or hurting yourself.

What Causes Depression?

Who Gets Depression?

In general, about 1 in 6 adults will have depression at some point in their life. Depression affects about 16 million adults each year in the US Anyone can become depressed, and depression can occur at any age and in any type of person.

Many people with depression also have other mental conditions.1, Anxiety disorders often go hand in hand with depression. People with anxiety disorders face intense and uncontrollable feelings of anxiety, fear, worry, or panic.1 These feelings can interfere with daily activities and can last for a long time.

Nowadays there is about 264 million people globally that battles against depression (WHO). Meaning, you are not battling against it alone. There are people who are feeling the same as what you feel. But you know what’s the worst thing that a depressed person could do? Suicide, even if you are depressed you should not take the risk of having suicide attempts. You feel depression your own, you know how it feels the most, so don’t put someone that cares about you in the same way as were you are before if you would take the risk of suicide. You may feel, that no one cares what if that is only you who feels like no one really cares even though there are a lot of people who want to help you.

Try opening up to those people you trust. They would love to be with you in that battle, so just let them be. Suicide is not the . Escaping from those problems will just going to make you weaker. The people you are comfortable in opening with may not help you, but they’re going to be by your side in that journey.

What About Anxiety?

Anxiety, most of the anxious people are from the adolescent years. by this time that the pandemic have been plaguing most of the globe. Anxiety, it is another disorder which is characterized as the serious range of panic. This type of disorder has a not very common symptoms such as experiencing panic attacks, overthinking and so on. Now, some people are saying it wrong that anxiety is a lower range of depression.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression is a serious mental disorder who affects someone feelings, beliefs and even the way they think. APA also states that depression is treatable. However, it may cause danger to you mentally and physically if not treated as soon as possible.

Anxiety is the deep feeling of restlessness. According to American Psychiatric Association, anxiety is somehow beneficial. Because it make an anxious person more alert on what’s about to happen. Remember that anxiety is different from a normal nervous. Fortunately, anxiety disorder is treatable.

Now, both of these mental illness are different towards one another, but it can still cause people danger. Speaking yourself out towards other people will going to help you in winning your battles against it. Believe in yourself even though it seems to be impossible. Always believe that you can overcome such things.
