My Dedication To Become An Expert In Clinical Psychology
All throughout my adolescence I have always heard that nothing good in life comes easy. In my twenty-one years of life, with all my experiences I stand behind that notion. If breaking language barriers when moving from a third world country and living outside of my comfortable norm wasn’t enough to push me back, there’s not an obstacle I can’t undertake.
My grandfather is the one I thank for my growing compassion for mental health. Psychology has been indirectly and directly apart of my life throughout the years. When I was in high school I shared a roof with someone who others always denounced as bigot and damaging. This individual wanted nothing but the worst for me and his actions could have affected me in negative way. From research and taking courses like psychology of personality, abnormal psychology, and physiological psychology I have learned to understand how I could help my autistic brother deal with his challenges to have a better tomorrow. I dedicate time to go with him to his therapy sessions and go the extra mile at home with any recommendations to make him feel comfortable and supported. Thankfully with a great support system and thick skin I am able to turn bad situations into a desire to strive for success.
My experiences have been a huge inspiration to me, and the reason why a career in mental health has always been on my radar. What most people don’t realize is that psychology encapsulates all aspect of our lives. As a result of my desire for mental health, on my free time I find myself willingly helping those around me with any challenges they are facing whether it is mentally, physically, or emotionally. Others have told me that they feel a sense of comfort and warming nature around me making it easier to share personal experiences, even as a stranger. My undergraduate’s education has prepared me for my chosen career in clinical psychology. I have grown to understand how people think and why they behave in the ways they do. I have looked at Piagets Theory of Cognitive development, Chomsky’s Language Acquisitions, studied the motivation and regulations in our brain structures, and have become intrigued by Carl Jung’s work in analytical psychology.
Throughout the years, I learned to have stability in order to handle emotional turmoil’s, improved communication skills both orally and written, and hold an open-minded and tolerant approach to those around me. With an opportunity to continue in this master’s program at my alumni university, my purpose is to not only make a difference in the lives of those struggling with mental or behavioral health conditions but also to the scientific community. I have a strong thirst for education. Forming relationships between brain functions, behavior, and environment; then applying learned and simple skills with research and observation to better understand the world we live in, is a challenge I am willing to advance. In addition to reignition in my passion and purpose for education, I also feel that my educational background will be advantageous to fulfilling this program.
Being a Dean’s List precipitant and A-B honor roll student, with a better than average GPA proves just how serious and dedicated I am to become a Clinical Psychologist. Not only is my goal to advance through fundamental knowledge of psychology, but to also show my commitment to the professional ethics, make a difference in multicultural and diversity of others, and show my appreciation for the value of the scientific community along with society. I decided to apply at Texas A&M Corpus Christi for several reasons. I am attracted to the Universities environment and faculty. Being here throughout my undergraduates has helped me grow into the student I am today. The university’s graduate program strong emphasis on mastering major scientific and psychological principles will better prepare me to advance in my chosen field. The Psychology program at this University has everything I am looking for, as I feel I have what Texas A&M Corpus Christi is looking for in their students. It would be an exciting new chapter to join the graduates incoming class of 2019 at this institution.
My ultimate goal is to earn a PhD in clinical psychology in order to become an expert in psychopathology, comprehensive mental, and behavioral health care for individuals. Accomplishing this working interpersonally with other professionals and groups to create effective solutions across different societies and cultures. To bring new research, consultation, and interventions pertaining to clinical psychology. I want to assist and transform mental health and broaden its importance not only nationally but globally.
